Overview
EN ISO 12402-6:2020 - Personal flotation devices - Part 6: Special application lifejackets and buoyancy aids - Safety requirements and additional test methods (ISO 12402-6:2020) is a CEN-adopted international standard that specifies safety requirements and supplementary test methods for special application lifejackets and buoyancy aids (PFDs) for adults, children and infants. It is intended to be used together with ISO 12402‑2, ‑3, ‑4 and ‑5 and replaces the earlier 2006 edition. The standard also contains provisions for marking, manufacturer information and consumer information at point of sale, and includes an informative Annex linking the standard to Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification of PFDs: definitions and classes (buoyancy aids vs lifejackets vs special application PFDs).
- Performance levels: defined performance levels (Level 50, 100, 150, 275) used to match device capability to user needs and risk.
- Special application categories: requirements and additional tests for application‑specific PFDs such as offshore sailing lifejackets, firefighting PFDs, commercial white‑water PFDs, and other specialised uses.
- User-assisted and inflatable PFDs: rules for user‑convertible inflatable PFDs, manual‑only inflatable PFDs, and required markings and consumer guidance.
- Other PFD types: inherently buoyant flotation suits, hybrid PFDs, and PFDs without cylinder seal indicators - each with specific construction, performance and information requirements.
- Testing and conformity: additional test methods to verify buoyancy, turning ability, durability and safety claims; requirements for manufacturer instructions, labeling and consumer information.
- Regulatory alignment: informative Annex ZA showing correspondence with EU Regulation (EU) 2016/425 for PPE conformity.
Applications
- Use this standard to develop, certify, test or purchase PFDs intended for special applications where standard leisure PFD rules are insufficient.
- Applicable for design and type‑approval of lifejackets used in offshore sailing, rescue and emergency services, firefighting operations, commercial water sports and other professional marine contexts.
- Supports conformity assessment under EU PPE legislation when cited in the Official Journal.
Who should use this standard
- PFD manufacturers and designers for product development and compliance.
- Testing and certification bodies and independent laboratories.
- Procurement officers, fleet safety managers and maritime safety regulators.
- Fire services, rescue organisations, commercial white‑water operators and PPE retailers seeking compliant products.
