Overview
EN ISO 22391-2:2009/A1:2020 - Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations - Polyethylene of raised temperature resistance (PE-RT) - Part 2: Pipes - Amendment 1 (ISO 22391-2:2009/Amd 1:2020) is a CEN-endorsed amendment approved in December 2020. It updates the original Part 2 (pipes) specification for PE-RT used in hot and cold water supply systems. The amendment replaces key tables on pipe dimensions and wall thickness tolerances and is published as EN ISO 22391-2:2009/A1:2020 and adopted nationally (implementation June 2021).
Key Topics
- Material focus: Polyethylene of raised temperature resistance (PE-RT) for plumbing and building water systems.
- Amendment scope: Modifies the original standard by replacing:
- Table 3 - Pipe dimensions for dimension class A (nominal outside diameters DN/OD and corresponding wall thicknesses for pipe series S5, S4, S3.2, S2.5). Sizes listed range from DN/OD 12 up to 250 mm with specified wall thickness minima/maxima for each series. (Note: a non-preferred wall thickness of 1.1 mm is permitted for d = 12.)
- Table 7 - Tolerance on wall thicknesses (tolerances given by wall-thickness ranges, expressed in mm as noted). The tolerance levels conform to Grade V in ISO 11922‑1.
- Standards governance: Prepared by ISO/TC 138 in collaboration with CEN/TC 155; CEN members are required to implement the amendment without alteration.
- Administrative notes: The document highlights potential patent-rights considerations and exists in official English, French and German versions.
Applications
- Use in hot and cold potable water distribution in residential, commercial and light industrial buildings.
- Specification and procurement of PE-RT pipes by manufacturers, wholesalers and OEMs.
- Design and engineering of plumbing and water supply systems, including selection of correct dimension class and wall thickness for service conditions.
- Quality control and compliance testing by laboratories and conformity assessment bodies using the updated dimensional and tolerance requirements.
- Reference for installers, specifiers and regulators when assessing product compliance with European/national standards.
Who should use this standard
- Pipe and fittings manufacturers producing PE-RT systems
- Mechanical engineers, plumbing designers and MEP consultants
- Installers and contractors specifying pipe sizes and pressure/temperature classes
- Testing laboratories, certification bodies and national standards organizations
- Procurement and quality teams ensuring products meet EN/ISO requirements
