Overview
EN ISO 8094:2013 (ISO 8094:2013) specifies a laboratory test method for determining the adhesion strength of the cover to the core layer of steel cord conveyor belts. Applied exclusively to steel cord conveyor belts, the standard defines specimen preparation, test apparatus, test conditions and the calculation and reporting of adhesion strength results. EN ISO 8094:2013 is the CEN-adopted version of ISO 8094:2013 and supersedes earlier regional documents.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies only to steel cord conveyor belts and addresses the adhesion (bond) between cover rubber and the steel-cord core layer.
- Test principle: Stripping test - measure the force required to separate (strip) the cover from the core layer.
- Apparatus: Use a tensile test machine with jaws as described in ISO 36.
- Specimens:
- Six specimens minimum, cut parallel to belt axis and ≥50 mm from the belt edge.
- Typical specimen dimensions: length ≥150 mm, width ≈25 mm (specific tolerances given for belts with metallic weft), full belt thickness, and each specimen must include at least two steel cords.
- Cover rubber is cut back along the cords to allow safe gripping in the jaws.
- Procedure:
- Tests performed at least five days after manufacture.
- Conditioning/atmosphere: default 23 °C ±2 °C and 50 % ±5 % RH (Atmosphere B) per ISO 18573, unless otherwise specified.
- Run three tests for the top cover and three for the bottom cover. Jaws gap widening speed: 100 mm/min ±10 mm/min.
- Record a force-versus-displacement plot for each test.
- Result calculation:
- Determine median force F (per ISO 6133) from the force trace.
- Adhesion strength T (N/mm) = F / b, where b is specimen width in mm. Round values to 0.1 N/mm.
- Test report must reference ISO 8094 and include belt identification, specimen width, adhesion results for top and bottom covers and any non‑standard test details or events.
Applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing of steel cord conveyor belts used in mining, bulk handling, ports, and heavy industry.
- Supplier verification of cover-to-core bonding performance.
- Failure investigation and R&D for belt compound or construction changes.
- Contractual specification and compliance testing for end-users, procurement teams and testing laboratories.
