Full title and description

GOST 12.4.310-2016 — "Occupational safety standards system. Special clothing to protect from oil and oil products. Technical requirements." The standard establishes technical requirements for special work clothing (including insulated garments) intended to protect workers from contact with crude oil and petroleum products, and covers materials, design features, sizing, testing and marking relevant to such protective clothing.

Abstract

This intergovernmental (GOST) standard defines the technical requirements for manufacturing, testing and labeling special protective clothing used by personnel exposed to oil and oil-derived products. It was prepared by the Central Research Institute of the Sewing Industry (ЦНИИШП) and adopted to replace the earlier national standard, providing harmonized requirements for designers, manufacturers, purchasers and conformity assessment bodies in the member states. The standard includes normative references, mandatory requirements, and two appendices (grouping of oils and mandatory sizing tables).

General information

  • Status: Replaced / withdrawn (superseded by GOST 12.4.310-2020).
  • Publication date: Registered 26 December 2016; date of introduction (effective date) 1 January 2018.
  • Publisher: Adopted and entered into force by the Federal Agency on Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) as an interstate (GOST) standard; prepared by OAO "Central Research Institute of the Sewing Industry" (ЦНИИШП).
  • ICS / categories: 13.340.10 (protective clothing / occupational safety).
  • Edition / version: GOST 12.4.310-2016 (introduced 2018); note: replaced by GOST 12.4.310-2020.
  • Number of pages: 16 (some catalog listings show 16–17 pages depending on formatting/edition).

Scope

The standard applies to special protective clothing intended to protect workers from the effects of crude oil and petroleum products. It sets the technical requirements for garment design and construction, selection of materials and components, performance characteristics (including resistance to oil permeation and contamination), sizing, marking and documentation. It is intended for use in design, production, procurement and conformity assessment of protective garments used in oil extraction, refining, transport and related operations. The standard was used as the national reference until it was superseded by the 2020 revision.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions and classification of special clothing for protection against oil and petroleum products.
  • Technical requirements for materials and assemblies used in garment manufacture (durability, tear and tensile properties, resistance to oil and oil products).
  • Performance and test methods referenced from related standards (electrostatic properties, penetration/permeation tests, mechanical tests).
  • Design, construction and mandatory sizing (appendix B — mandatory sizes) to ensure proper fit and protection.
  • Marking, labeling and documentation requirements for traceability and user information.
  • Grouping/classification of oils and petroleum products relevant to selection of protective materials (appendix A — grouping of oils).

Typical use and users

Primary users include PPE designers and manufacturers, occupational safety specialists, procurement teams in oil & gas extraction, refining and transport companies, conformity assessment and certification bodies, and regulatory / inspection authorities. The standard supports specification of garments for field work, maintenance, emergency response and other tasks where workers may be exposed to crude oil and petroleum products.

Related standards

Relevant references and related standards include earlier national standard GOST R 12.4.290-2013 (replaced), standards on protective clothing for low temperatures (GOST 12.4.303), electrostatic properties and flammability (GOST EN 1149 series / GOST EN 340), and test-method standards such as the GOST/ISO series for determination of penetration/permeation by chemicals. The 2016 GOST itself was the basis for revision work leading to GOST 12.4.310-2020.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: It is an interstate (GOST) occupational safety standard specifying technical requirements for special clothing designed to protect workers from the effects of crude oil and petroleum products.

Q: What does it cover?

A: The standard covers material and construction requirements, performance characteristics, referenced test methods, sizing, marking and documentation for protective garments intended for use in oil and petroleum environments. It includes appendices with oil groupings and mandatory sizing tables.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: PPE manufacturers, safety engineers and occupational health specialists in the oil & gas sector, procurement and quality assurance teams, and certification bodies use the standard to design, specify, produce and assess conformity of protective clothing.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: GOST 12.4.310-2016 has been superseded/withdrawn and replaced by a later edition, GOST 12.4.310-2020; users should refer to the 2020 version (or the current national/interstate catalog) for the latest requirements.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is part of the "System of occupational safety standards" (ССБТ) and is linked to other protective clothing standards in the GOST series (for example standards on general protective-clothing requirements, cold-protective clothing, electrostatic properties and specific test methods).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Protective clothing, oil protection, petroleum products, PPE, technical requirements, testing, marking, sizing, GOST.
