Full title and description
GOST R 53255-2019 — Firefighting equipment. Self-contained open-circuit compressed-air breathing apparatus. General technical requirements. Test methods. (Russian: ГОСТ Р 53255-2019 «Техника пожарная. Аппараты дыхательные со сжатым воздухом с открытым циклом дыхания. Общие технические требования. Методы испытаний»).
Abstract
This national standard establishes classification, general technical requirements and standardized test methods for self-contained open-circuit compressed-air breathing apparatus used by firefighters and related emergency responders to protect respiratory organs and vision in toxic, smoke-filled and otherwise non-breathable atmospheres. It covers performance, climatic and mechanical durability tests, breathing-resistance limits, rescue-device requirements and marking/identification.
General information
- Status: Active / Enacted (replaces ГОСТ Р 53255-2009).
- Publication date: Approved by Rosstandart order 18 September 2019; date of introduction into force 1 January 2022.
- Publisher: Federal Agency on Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) / national standard of the Russian Federation.
- ICS / categories: Protective devices — respiratory protective devices; national classification often shown as 13.340.30 (devices for respiratory protection).
- Edition / version: Edition 2019 (GOST R 53255-2019).
- Number of pages: Approx. 44 pages (published commercial/registry copies list 44 pages).
Scope
The standard applies to self-contained open-circuit compressed-air breathing apparatus intended for use in firefighting and related rescue operations. It specifies classification by intended use (general-purpose and special-purpose/climate versions), required operational performance across specified breathing regimes (examples: lung ventilation test regimes at about 30, 60 and 100 dm3/min), pressure and filling limits for supply cylinders, environmental/climatic endurance (including low- and high-temperature and high-humidity tests), mechanical resistance tests, and methods to assess protective time (duration of protective action) and breathing resistance. Optional features such as telemetry/communication modules and refill system interfaces are addressed where relevant.
Key topics and requirements
- Classification of apparatus (general-purpose and special-purpose/climatic versions) and corresponding operational temperature/humidity ranges.
- Performance test regimes including lung ventilation rates (30, 60 and 100 dm3/min) used to verify functional performance and rescue-device operation.
- Limits on breathing resistance and CO2 build-up, measured by specified test methods and acceptance criteria.
- Cylinder pressure and refilling system requirements (examples include design/operational pressures referenced in test procedures).
- Climatic and mechanical durability tests (cold, heat, humidity, vibration, shock) and sequence-of-tests protocols.
- Requirements and test methods for associated facepieces and sealing assemblies (often covered in companion standards).
- Marking, documentation, identification of protective time, maintenance and inspection requirements necessary for safe use and certification.
Typical use and users
Primary users include municipal and industrial fire brigades, emergency and rescue services, manufacturers and designers of breathing apparatus, testing and certification laboratories, conformity-assessment bodies and procurement authorities responsible for specifying and accepting firefighting respiratory protective equipment. The standard is used to design, test, certify and procure SCBA units for firefighting applications.
Related standards
Closely related or referenced documents include EN 137:2006 (open-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus — comparable international reference), ГОСТ Р 53257-2019 (facepieces for respiratory protective equipment), ГОСТ Р 53264-2019 (firefighter protective clothing) and the earlier national edition ГОСТ Р 53255-2009 which this 2019 edition replaces.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: A Russian national standard (GOST R 53255-2019) that sets general technical requirements and test methods for self-contained open-circuit compressed-air breathing apparatus intended for firefighting and rescue operations.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers classification, performance requirements (including standardized breathing-load test regimes), breathing-resistance limits, cylinder/refill parameters, climatic and mechanical durability tests, methods to determine protective time and requirements for marking and documentation.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Fire and rescue services, SCBA manufacturers, testing and certification laboratories, conformity-assessment bodies and procurement/specification teams for emergency equipment.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: It is current (active). The standard was approved by Rosstandart on 18 September 2019 and introduced into force on 1 January 2022; it replaces ГОСТ Р 53255-2009.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is part of a set of firefighting and respiratory-protection standards published around the same period (for example, ГОСТ Р 53257-2019 for facepieces and ГОСТ Р 53264-2019 for firefighter clothing) and aligns with international practice (EN 137 as a comparable reference).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Self-contained breathing apparatus, open-circuit, compressed air, firefighting, test methods, breathing resistance, protective time, facepiece, climatic tests, Rosstandart.
