Full title and description
ГОСТ Р ЕН 361-2008 — Система стандартов безопасности труда. Средства индивидуальной защиты от падения с высоты. Страховочные привязи. Общие технические требования. Методы испытаний. (English title: Occupational safety standards system. Personal protective equipment against falls from a height. Full body harnesses. General technical requirements. Test methods). This document is национальный (GOST R) текст идентичный (IDT) европейскому стандарту EN 361:2002, и устанавливает технические требования, методы испытаний, маркировку, информацию изготовителя и требования к упаковке для полных страховочных привязей (full body harnesses).
Abstract
GOST R EN 361-2008 is the Russian national adoption of EN 361 (full body harnesses). It defines construction and ergonomic requirements, materials and component strength, static and dynamic test methods (including dynamic impact tests with a test mass), marking and user information, and requirements for inspection and packaging to ensure harnesses used in fall-arrest applications perform safely. The standard was approved by the Federal Agency for Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rosstandart) and entered into force for Russia on 1 July 2009.
General information
- Status: In force / действует.
- Publication date: Approved by order of Rosstandart on 18 December 2008; introduced into force 1 July 2009.
- Publisher: Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rosstandart); printed/redistributed by standard publishers (e.g., Standartinform / commercial standards houses).

- Edition / version: ГОСТ Р ЕН 361-2008 (IDT EN 361:2002).
- Number of pages: Approximately 11–12 pages (standard document editions and commercial copies commonly list 11–12 pages depending on formatting).
(Entries above are based on the national standard record and translations of EN 361 technical scope and metadata.)
Scope
Specifies requirements, test methods, marking, manufacturer-supplied information and packaging for full body harnesses used in fall-arrest systems. The standard applies to harnesses intended to arrest falls from height (fall-arrest harnesses) and may be used together with related standards for connectors, lanyards and complete fall-arrest systems. It does not cover complete fall-arrest systems (covered by EN 363) or rescue-only harnesses (covered by other standards).
Key topics and requirements
- Design and ergonomics — harness geometry, attachment point locations (dorsal, sternal, ventral), adjustment means and comfort features.
- Materials and construction — webbing and sewing threads from synthetic fibres meeting minimum tenacity requirements; compatible components and construction practices.
- Static strength — minimum static load / breaking strength requirements for webbing, seams and structural components.
- Dynamic performance — dynamic impact testing (typically using a 100 kg test mass and specified fall conditions) to verify energy absorption and user retention; limitation of post‑fall tilt angle and no catastrophic failure.
- Attachment elements and hardware — requirements for D‑rings, buckles and other fittings including strength, deformation limits and corrosion resistance.
- Marking, instructions and packaging — mandatory markings, manufacturer information, instructions for use, maintenance and periodic inspection instructions.
- Test methods and sampling — definitions of test procedures, sample conditioning, and pass/fail criteria.
Typical use and users
Applied by harness manufacturers for design and certification, testing laboratories performing conformity and type-testing, procurement and safety managers specifying PPE, and end users in industries with fall hazards — construction, utilities, oil & gas, rope access, window cleaning, maintenance, rescue and emergency services. The standard is used where Russia-based conformity or harmonized references to EN requirements are required.
Related standards
Belongs to the fall‑protection family of standards. Typical related documents include EN 358 (work positioning belts and lanyards), EN 362 (connectors), EN 363 (fall arrest systems), EN 365 (general requirements for information, maintenance and periodic examination), EN 1497 (rescue harnesses) and the corresponding national GOST R adoptions (e.g., ГОСТ Р ЕН 358, ГОСТ Р ЕН 362, ГОСТ Р ЕН 363, ГОСТ Р ЕН 365).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ГОСТ Р ЕН 361-2008 is the Russian national (GOST R) adoption of the European standard EN 361 (full body harnesses). It sets technical and testing requirements for full body fall‑arrest harnesses.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers design, materials, component strength, static and dynamic test methods (including dynamic impact testing with a specified test mass and fall), marking, user instructions, inspection and packaging requirements for full body harnesses intended for fall arrest. It does not cover entire fall‑arrest systems (EN 363) or rescue harnesses covered by other standards.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers, certification and testing laboratories, safety/specification engineers and procurement officers, occupational-safety professionals, and end users in construction, utilities, rope-access, oil & gas, maintenance and rescue operations.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: As published it was approved on 18 December 2008 and introduced into force on 1 July 2009 as ГОСТ Р ЕН 361-2008; available records show the standard listed as действующий (in force) in national databases and standards catalogs. Users should check the official national standards registry or Rosstandart for any later revisions or replacement after the date of this summary.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes. It is part of the fall‑protection standards series and is usually applied together with standards for connectors, lanyards and complete systems (EN 358, EN 362, EN 363, EN 365, etc.), and the Russian GOST R equivalents.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Full body harness; fall arrest; PPE; dynamic impact test; attachment point; marking; EN 361; ГОСТ Р; harness certification.
