Safety of machinery. Permanent means of access to machinery. Part 2. Working platforms and walkways
Full title and description
Abstract
This national standard reproduces the requirements of ISO 14122-2:2001 (IDT) for non-powered working platforms and walkways that form part of machinery. It specifies design, material, load, drainage, slip-resistance and guarding measures to provide safe permanent access to machines for operation, inspection, maintenance and repair, and includes guidance on removable but machine-related platforms.
General information
- Status: National standard (GOST R), adopted (identical translation of ISO 14122-2:2001).
- Publication date: Approved 30 November 2010; introduced (effective) 1 July 2011.
- Publisher: Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rosstandart) / national standards publication system of the Russian Federation.
- ICS / categories: 13.110 (Safety of machinery).
- Edition / version: Edition 2010 (GOST R adoption of ISO 14122-2:2001, designation GOST R ISO 14122-2-2010).
- Number of pages: 12 (national publication).
Scope
The standard applies to all stationary and mobile machinery that require fixed (non-powered) means of access where working platforms and walkways form part of the machine. It may also be applied to parts of a building serving principally as access to machinery. The document is intended to be used together with the other parts of the ISO 14122 series and provides minimum safety requirements for design, loading, slip resistance, drainage and guarding of platforms and walkways to reduce risks of slips, trips and falls.
Key topics and requirements
- Classification and selection of fixed working platforms and walkways that form part of machinery.
- Design and material requirements to ensure structural strength, stability and corrosion resistance.
- Slip-resistant flooring and drainage to prevent hazards from spilled liquids and surface contamination (design for self-draining where possible).
- Minimum design loads: typically a uniformly distributed load of 2 kN/m² and a concentrated load of 1.5 kN applied to a 200 × 200 mm area (design deflection limits applied).
- Guarding: requirements for guard‑rails, toe plates and prevention of falling objects; consideration for removal of machine parts without dismantling permanent guards where practicable.
- Ergonomic siting of platforms (work height guidance), safe distances from hazards, and provisions for removable or adjustable platform parts that are non‑powered (folding/sliding) if used.
Typical use and users
Used by machine manufacturers, plant designers, safety engineers, maintenance and service personnel, certification bodies and regulatory authorities to design, assess and document fixed access arrangements (platforms and walkways) on machinery and machine installations.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 14122 series (Parts 1–4). Related standards and references commonly used alongside this document include ISO 14122-1 (choice of fixed means of access and general requirements), ISO 14122-3 (stairs, stepladders and guard-rails), ISO 14122-4 (fixed ladders), ISO 12100 (general principles for design and risk assessment) and ISO 14120 (guards). Note: ISO 14122-2 was later revised at international level (ISO 14122-2:2016), which supersedes the 2001 edition on the ISO side.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: It is the Russian national adoption (GOST R ISO 14122-2-2010) of ISO 14122-2:2001, giving requirements for permanent (non-powered) working platforms and walkways that are part of machinery.
Q: What does it cover?
A: Design, materials, loadings, slip-resistance, drainage, guarding (guard‑rails and toe plates), ergonomic siting and related safety measures for working platforms and walkways associated with machines; it also covers certain removable but machine-related platforms.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Machine builders, plant and safety engineers, maintenance teams, inspection and conformity assessment bodies, and regulators when specifying or verifying safe permanent access to machinery.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: GOST R ISO 14122-2-2010 is an adoption of ISO 14122-2:2001 (approved in Russia in 2010 and effective 1 July 2011). At the international level ISO 14122-2 was revised in 2016 (ISO 14122-2:2016), which supersedes the 2001 edition; users should verify whether a newer national adoption or replacement has been issued in the Russian system before applying the 2010 text.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 14122 series (Permanent means of access to machinery). The series includes Part 1 (general/selection), Part 2 (platforms and walkways), Part 3 (stairs, stepladders and guard-rails) and Part 4 (fixed ladders).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Working platform; walkway; permanent means of access; slip-resistant surface; guard-rail; design load; machine access; safety of machinery.
