Overview
ISO 3598:2011 provides a structured basis for the preparation of technical specifications for textile glass yarns - including strands, slivers, single yarns, folded yarns and cable yarns. The document is a template for buyers, manufacturers and standards writers: it lists the items that a product specification should address, references the applicable test methods and clarifies what is outside its scope (for example textured yarns, rovings, chopped strands, milled fibres and pre‑impregnated yarns).
The standard is intended as a specification framework rather than a complete, application‑specific standard. Where additional requirements are needed for specialised uses, those are to be defined in other appropriate International Standards.
Key Topics
-
Designation
- Yarns should be designated in accordance with ISO 2078 so product identity and type of glass are clear.
-
Conditioning and atmosphere
- Conditioning and testing atmospheres should reference ISO 139 or ISO 291 where applicable.
-
Essential characteristics (the specification should list these and any tolerances):
-
Defects and acceptance
- The standard lists known visible defects for yarns and windings (hairiness, contamination, cut filaments, bad splices, winding anomalies, foreign matter, damaged supports). Specifications must define allowable numbers and severity and the acceptance/rejection criteria for lots.
-
Packaging, labelling and delivery
- Requirements for presentation, packaging and external labelling (designation, supplier code, winding and package type, net mass, supplier name, manufacture date) should be specified.
-
Storage
- Storage conditions (temperature, relative humidity, duration) required to preserve yarn properties must be defined in the specification.
Applications
ISO 3598:2011 is practically useful for:
- Preparing purchase and quality specifications for textile glass yarns used in reinforcement and textile manufacturing.
- Defining test and acceptance criteria for incoming inspection and supplier contracts.
- Ensuring consistent labelling, packaging and storage practices for supply chain traceability.
