Overview
ISO 4379:2024 - Plain bearings - Copper alloy bushes - Dimensions and tolerances defines standardized dimensions, chamfers and tolerance classes for solid mono‑metal copper alloy bushes used as plain bearings. The standard covers cylindrical (type C) and flanged (type F) bushes with inside diameters (d1) from 6 mm to 200 mm, and applies to bushes with or without oil holes and oil grooves.
Key topics
- Dimensions and tolerance tables: Detailed size tables for type C and type F bushes (including Series 1 and Series 2 for flanged types) and associated tolerance classes; specific tolerances are given in Table 3 of the standard.
- Chamfers and construction: Typical outside chamfers of 45° and 15° are specified; special chamfers and undercuts are handled by agreement between manufacturer and customer.
- Material requirements: Cast and wrought copper alloys referenced to ISO 4382‑1 and ISO 4382‑2 respectively.
- Surface finish: Surface roughness indication follows ISO 21920‑1; edges must be free of burrs and slight outside indentations are permissible if they do not affect fit/function.
- Fits and tolerancing notes: Guidance on shaft fits, IT grade considerations, coaxial tolerance and axial runout. The document references general tolerancing rules in ISO 2768‑1.
- Quality assurance and inspection: References ISO 12301 for control techniques and inspection of geometrical and material characteristics.
- Designation rules: Standardized naming examples (e.g., “Bush ISO 4379 - C 20 × 24 × 20 Y - CuSn8P”) and notes on specifying chamfers, oil features and tolerance deviations.
Applications
ISO 4379:2024 is intended for:
- OEMs and component manufacturers producing plain bearing bushes for general machinery and rotating assemblies.
- Mechanical designers and bearing engineers specifying copper alloy bushings for sliding or plain bearing applications.
- Quality engineers and inspectors verifying dimensional conformance, surface finish and material per referenced ISO standards.
- Procurement and supply chain teams ensuring interchangeable, standardized bushes for maintenance and production.
Typical use cases include pivot points, gearboxes, pumps, compressors and other assemblies where plain bearings (bushings) are required, including designs with hydrodynamic or boundary lubrication (note: fits should be checked for hydrodynamic lubrication conditions).
