Overview
EN ISO 14509-3:2018 (ISO 14509-3:2009 endorsed by CEN) specifies a hybrid sound assessment method for airborne noise from powered monohull recreational craft. The standard applies to craft up to 24 m in hull length with a Froude number (Fn) > 1.1 and excludes personal watercraft (PWC). It combines a calculation method for hull‑form noise with an on‑board measurement of exhaust/engine contributions to predict the A‑weighted sound pressure level (LpAmax) that would be observed at 25 m (pass‑by equivalent).
This method was developed from the SoundBoat project and provides a reproducible alternative to ISO 14509‑1 pass‑by testing that is independent of location and many weather constraints.
