Overview
EN ISO 16092-3:2018 (ISO 16092-3:2017) is the Type C standard addressing machine tools safety for hydraulic presses. It supplements ISO 16092‑1 and specifies technical safety requirements and protective measures for the design, manufacture and supply of hydraulic presses intended to work cold metal (or materials partly made of cold metal). The standard covers a wide range of presses - from small, high‑speed single-operator machines to large, slow-speed multi-operator equipment - and addresses hazards during all phases of machine life as defined in ISO 12100:2010.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard provides detailed safety guidance and requirements, including:
- Hazard identification: list of significant hazards and reasonably foreseeable misuse.
- Design fundamentals: basic design considerations for hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.
- Hydraulic system specifics: response time, speed limitation and related safety measures (see Annex C and F).
- Mechanical hazards in the tools area: defining major danger zones, guarding, interlocks and trapped-person release procedures.
- Control and monitoring systems: required control/monitoring functions, muting, selection devices, position sensors, valves and performance levels for safety functions (see Clause 5.4).
- Tool-setting and maintenance: safe movement control during setup, trial strokes, inching devices and lockout considerations.
- Verification and documentation: verification of implemented safety measures, marking, warnings and user instructions.
- Normative and informative annexes: e.g., calculation of minimum distances (Annex B), interlocking devices (Annex D), stopping-time measurement (Annex E).
Practical applications
EN ISO 16092-3:2018 is used to:
- Design and validate safe hydraulic press systems and components.
- Define guarding, control logic and safety function performance for press manufacturers.
- Support risk assessments and conformity assessments for machinery placed on EU and international markets.
- Provide presumption of conformity with essential requirements of the EU Machinery Directive (see Annex ZA) when applied within its scope.
Who should use this standard
- Press designers and manufacturers
- Machine tool integrators and safety engineers
- Regulatory bodies and market surveillance authorities
- Maintenance and reliability teams responsible for safe tool-setting, servicing and inspections
- Health & safety consultants performing risk assessments for press installations
