Full title and description

ISO 10123:2013 — Adhesives — Determination of shear strength of anaerobic adhesives using pin-and-collar specimens. This International Standard specifies a laboratory test method to determine the static shear strength of anaerobic-curing liquid adhesives when used to retain cylindrical assemblies (pin-and-collar type) and for locking/sealing threaded fasteners; the method may also be applied to other adhesives.

Abstract

ISO 10123:2013 describes the preparation of pin-and-collar specimens, controlled curing of anaerobic adhesives, the shear test procedure to measure the force required to cause joint failure, and the calculation and reporting of static shear strength for ranking and quality-control purposes. The test is intended for laboratory comparison and quality control and does not in itself predict full in-service performance.

General information

  • Status: Published (International Standard).
  • Publication date: November 2013 (Edition 2; some distributors record the publication date as 29 October 2013).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 83.180 (Adhesives).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2013).
  • Number of pages: 8.

Scope

Specifies a laboratory method for determining the static shear strength of anaerobic-curing liquid adhesives using standard pin-and-collar specimens. The procedure covers specimen design and dimensions, surface preparation, adhesive application, controlled cure conditions, test-speed and test-fixture requirements, measurement of shear force and calculation of shear strength. The method is aimed at ranking adhesives and routine quality control rather than predicting the complete in-service behaviour of bonded assemblies.

Key topics and requirements

  • Pin-and-collar specimen geometry, materials and dimensional tolerances.
  • Surface preparation and cleaning requirements for metallic specimens.
  • Adhesive application and defined conditioning/curing intervals before testing.
  • Test-fixture design and alignment to ensure single-shear loading on the adhesive layer.
  • Controlled crosshead speed and measurement of maximum shear force.
  • Calculation of static shear strength from force and bonded area; presentation of results for ranking and QC.
  • Limits of applicability: intended for laboratory ranking and quality control, not a direct predictor of service performance.

Typical use and users

Used by adhesives manufacturers, quality-control laboratories, materials testing services, OEM engineering teams (particularly in automotive, aerospace and mechanical assembly contexts), and research groups evaluating anaerobic adhesives for retention, locking or sealing applications. Typical uses include product development, batch acceptance testing, incoming quality control, and comparative performance screening.

Related standards

ISO 10123:2013 revises and replaces ISO 10123:1990 (withdrawn). It is related to other ISO test methods and technical work under ISO/TC 61 (Plastics and rubber and related products) / SC 11 (Adhesives), and should be considered alongside other adhesive test standards used for tensile, peel and fatigue evaluations where broader performance assessment is required.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10123:2013 is an International Standard that specifies a laboratory test method for determining the static shear strength of anaerobic-curing liquid adhesives using pin-and-collar specimens.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers specimen design, surface preparation, adhesive application and conditioning, test-fixture and machine requirements, the shear test procedure, calculation of shear strength, and reporting for ranking and quality-control purposes. It does not guarantee in-service performance.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Adhesive manufacturers, test laboratories, OEM engineers, quality/production control teams, and researchers evaluating anaerobic adhesives for retention, locking or sealing functions.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 10123:2013 is the current (second) edition published in 2013 and it supersedes ISO 10123:1990, which was withdrawn.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of ISO’s body of standards and test methods addressing adhesives and adhesive testing developed under the relevant technical committee (ISO/TC 61/SC 11). While not a numbered “series” in itself, it complements other ISO adhesive test standards for tensile, peel and environmental performance.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Anaerobic adhesives, shear strength, pin-and-collar, adhesive testing, retention, locking, sealing, quality control, ISO 10123.
