Full title and description
ISO 10218-2:2025 — Robotics — Safety requirements — Part 2: Industrial robot applications and robot cells. This international standard specifies safety requirements and guidance for the design, integration, commissioning, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of industrial robot applications and robot cells, with emphasis on hazards introduced by application-level integration and the interaction of robots with other machines and end-effectors.
Abstract
Part 2 of ISO 10218 focuses on the system- and application-level safety of industrial robots: requirements for robot applications and robot cells, integration of machines and components, information for use, risk assessment and mitigation measures, and lifecycle activities from installation through decommissioning. It complements ISO 10218-1, which addresses requirements for robots themselves.

Scope
ISO 10218-2:2025 applies to industrial robot applications and robot cells and deals with significant hazards, hazardous situations and events that arise when the system is used as intended and under reasonably foreseeable misuse. It covers the design, integration, commissioning, operation, maintenance, decommissioning and disposal of robot systems and cells, and the provision of information for use to integrators, users and maintenance personnel. The standard explicitly excludes certain uses and environments such as underwater, military/defence, airborne/space, medical/healthcare for persons, consumer/household products, lifting or transporting people, and other specialized environments listed in the standard.
Key topics and requirements
- Risk assessment and risk reduction for robot applications and cells (hazard identification, evaluation, mitigation).
- Requirements for integration of robots with end-effectors, tooling and other machines in a cell.
- Protective measures: fixed and interlocked guards, protective devices, safety-rated control systems and safe stop functions.
- Requirements for safety-related control systems and their validation in the application context.
- Information for use: instructions for integration, commissioning, operation, maintenance and decommissioning.
- Requirements and guidance for safe layout of robot cells, access control, emergency stop and protective separation.
- Guidance on harmonization with collaborative-robot guidance and other relevant machine-safety standards.
Typical use and users
Used by robot manufacturers, system integrators, machine builders, plant safety engineers, maintenance teams, certification bodies and regulators. Typical applications include automated manufacturing cells, material handling cells, welding and machining cells, and any industrial setting where robots are integrated with other machinery or where human access and robot operation must be safely coordinated.
Related standards
ISO 10218-2 is part of the ISO 10218 series and is intended to be used alongside ISO 10218-1 (industrial robots — requirements for robots) and ISO/TS 15066 (collaborative robot guidance). Other commonly referenced safety standards for machinery and control systems include ISO 12100 (general machine safety and risk assessment), ISO 13849 and IEC 62061 (safety-related control systems / functional safety).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10218-2:2025 is an international standard specifying safety requirements and guidance for industrial robot applications and robot cells, focusing on system- and application-level hazards and integration.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers design and integration of robot applications and cells, lifecycle activities (commissioning, operation, maintenance, decommissioning), risk assessment and mitigation, information for use, and the responsibilities of integrators and users. It excludes certain domains such as medical, military, underwater and consumer/household uses.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Robot manufacturers, integrators, machine builders, safety engineers, plant operators, maintenance personnel, testing and certification bodies, and regulators use the standard to design, assess and certify safe robot applications and cells.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10218-2:2025 is the current published edition (Edition 2, published February 2025) and replaces ISO 10218-2:2011.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 10218 series. It is intended to be used together with ISO 10218-1 (requirements for robots) and with ISO/TS 15066 for collaborative robot considerations.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: industrial robot safety, robot cell, system integration, risk assessment, safety-related control systems, protective devices, commissioning, maintenance, ISO 10218
