Full title and description

Protective equipment for use in ice hockey — Part 1: General requirements. This International Standard specifies general requirements and test methods for head, face, eye, neck and body protectors (hereafter referred to as protectors) intended for use in ice hockey; it is the collating/introductory part of the ISO 10256 series and is to be read in conjunction with the performance parts of the series.

Abstract

This document sets out the general requirements, key safety and marking obligations, and the basic test methods that apply to protectors used in ice hockey (head, face, eye, neck and body protectors). It is limited to equipment intended specifically for ice hockey and establishes the foundation for the collateral parts of the ISO 10256 series that contain the detailed performance requirements.

General information

  • Status: Published (current International Standard).
  • Publication date: 16 July 2024 (ISO edition 2, 2024).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 13.340.20; 97.220.20.
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2024).
  • Number of pages: 7 (ISO official PDF). Note: some national/adopted versions or distributor copies include additional front matter and may report a different total page count.

Scope

ISO 10256-1:2024 provides the general requirements, definitions, marking and information-for-user requirements, and basic test-method descriptions that apply to protectors used in ice hockey. It is limited to equipment intended for ice hockey and does not replace the part-specific performance requirements in the other parts of the ISO 10256 series. The part is intended to be read together with the collateral performance parts (for head protectors, face/eye protectors, goalkeeper head/face protectors, etc.).

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions and terminology used across the ISO 10256 series.
  • Innocuousness and materials safety (biocompatibility/harmlessness of materials in contact with users).
  • Ergonomics and fit — basic ergonomic requirements to ensure protectors are wearable and do not impair performance.
  • Test report content and required test-method summaries that accompany performance parts.
  • Permanent markings and labelling requirements (identification, size, manufacturer, care and safe-use information).
  • Information for users — instructions, warnings and intended-use statements that must accompany protectors.
  • Reference to collateral parts (performance tests and criteria for specific protector types).

Typical use and users

Used by manufacturers and designers of ice-hockey protective equipment, testing and certification laboratories, national standards bodies and conformity assessment organizations, procurement officers for teams and leagues, and safety officers in sports organizations seeking to ensure equipment meets internationally recognized baseline requirements.

Related standards

ISO 10256 is a multipart series. Relevant related parts published or in development include: ISO 10256-2:2024 — Head protectors for skaters (performance requirements and test methods); ISO 10256-3:2024 — Face and eye protectors for skaters (performance requirements and test methods); ISO 10256-4:2024 — Head and face protectors for goalkeepers (performance requirements and test methods); ISO/FDIS 10256-5 (under approval) — Neck laceration protectors (being revised to align with the 2024 series). These parts contain the specific performance tests and pass/fail criteria that are used together with the general requirements in Part 1.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10256-1:2024 is the general‑requirements part of the ISO 10256 series that defines baseline requirements, labelling and general test-method descriptions for protective equipment intended for use in ice hockey.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers general requirements applicable to head, face, eye, neck and body protectors used in ice hockey — e.g., definitions, harmlessness of materials, ergonomics, required markings, user information and the form/content of test reports; specific performance criteria are given in the companion parts of the series.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers and designers of hockey protective gear, test laboratories and certification bodies, standards committees, and purchasers (teams, leagues, clubs) who require equipment to meet international baseline safety and information requirements.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: Current — ISO 10256-1:2024 (Edition 2) replaces the 2016 edition. The 2024 edition is the published, up-to-date edition as of July 2024.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 1 of the multipart ISO 10256 series. The series includes Parts 2, 3 and 4 (published 2024) covering specific protector types, and Part 5 (neck laceration protectors) is in the FDIS/approval stage for revision to align with the 2024 series.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: ice hockey, protective equipment, head protection, face protection, eye protection, neck laceration protector, body protector, test methods, markings, ISO 10256.
