Full title and description

Fibre-reinforced plastics — Moulding compounds and prepregs — Determination of mass per unit area and fibre mass per unit area (ISO 10352:2020). This International Standard specifies procedures to determine both the overall mass per unit area and the fibre mass per unit area of moulding compounds and prepregs, and defines five methods for determining fibre mass per unit area (extraction, ignition, wet combustion and calculation approaches).

Abstract

This document specifies a method for the determination of the mass per unit area and gives five methods (Methods A–E) for determining the fibre mass per unit area of moulding compounds and prepregs: Method A (Soxhlet extraction), Method B (immersion in solvent), Method C (decomposition by loss on ignition), Method D (wet combustion extraction) and Method E (calculation). It applies to moulding compound and preimpregnated unidirectional sheet, tape, fabric and mats and to prepregs using common reinforcements (aramid, carbon, glass, etc.) and thermosetting or thermoplastic matrices; it excludes prepregs whose reinforcement is soluble (or partly soluble) in the solvents used to dissolve the resin.

General information

  • Status: Published (current version confirmed during review).
  • Publication date: 31 August 2020 (ISO edition 4, 2020).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 83.120 — Reinforced plastics / composites.
  • Edition / version: Edition 4 (2020).
  • Number of pages: 15 pages (ISO published document).

Scope

ISO 10352:2020 defines test procedures to determine the mass per unit area of moulding compounds and prepregs and to determine the fibre mass per unit area by five alternative methods. The standard is applicable to sheet moulding compound and preimpregnated unidirectional sheet, tape, fabric and mats, and to prepregs incorporating common reinforcement fibres (e.g., glass, carbon, aramid) with thermosetting or thermoplastic matrices. It does not apply where the reinforcement is (partly) soluble in the solvents used to dissolve the resin. The five specified methods cover solvent extraction (Soxhlet and immersion), loss on ignition, wet combustion and a calculation method.

Key topics and requirements

  • Determination of overall mass per unit area (surface mass) for moulding compounds and prepregs.
  • Five alternative methods for fibre mass per unit area: Method A — Soxhlet extraction.
  • Method B — Immersion extraction in a beaker (solvent immersion).
  • Method C — Decomposition by loss on ignition (LOI) / ignition residue.
  • Method D — Extraction by wet combustion (chemical oxidation).
  • Method E — Determination by calculation (mass-balance approach).
  • Applicability notes and exclusions: handling of sizing/finishes (normally dissolve with resin and are included in resin content) and exclusion of reinforcements soluble in test solvents.
  • Requirements for sample preparation, selection of appropriate method depending on matrix/reinforcement chemistry, and care with solvent selection and ignition parameters (method-dependent).

Typical use and users

ISO 10352:2020 is used by composite-material test laboratories, quality and production control teams in composite manufacturing (aerospace, automotive, marine, sporting goods), R&D groups developing prepregs and moulding compounds, standards committees, and certification bodies that require consistent measurement of surface mass and fibre content. Laboratories and manufacturers choose the most appropriate method (A–E) based on material chemistry and available equipment.

Related standards

ISO 10352:2020 revises and replaces ISO 10352:2010 (withdrawn). Other related ISO and composite testing documents commonly referenced alongside ISO 10352 include standards on prepreg properties and test methods such as ISO 15034 (prepreg resin flow), ISO 15040 (prepreg gel time) and various ISO/TC 61/SC 13 documents covering reinforced plastics and test methods; national/adopted EN versions (EN ISO 10352) and regional adoptions exist as well.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10352:2020 is an International Standard that specifies procedures to determine the mass per unit area and the fibre mass per unit area of moulding compounds and prepregs (Edition 4, published August 2020).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers measurement of surface mass and five methods for measuring fibre mass per unit area (Soxhlet extraction, immersion extraction, loss on ignition, wet combustion and calculation), applicability to common reinforcements and matrices, and exclusions where reinforcement is soluble in the test solvents.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Composite manufacturers, materials test laboratories, R&D teams, certification and conformity assessment bodies, and standards developers working with prepregs and moulding compounds.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 10352:2020 is the current published version (published 31 August 2020). The 2010 edition was withdrawn and superseded by the 2020 edition. The ISO record indicates the 2020 edition remains the active version following its review.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the body of ISO standards for reinforced plastics and prepregs developed under ISO/TC 61/SC 13; related test-method standards for composite materials and prepregs are published in adjacent ISO documents (see related standards).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: mass per unit area, surface mass, fibre mass per unit area, Soxhlet, extraction, loss on ignition, wet combustion, moulding compound, prepreg, composites.
