Full title and description
Petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries — Lubrication, shaft-sealing and control-oil systems and auxiliaries — Part 1: General requirements. This international standard specifies general requirements for lubrication systems, oil-type shaft-sealing systems, dry-gas face-type shaft-sealing systems and control-oil systems for general- or special-purpose applications serving equipment such as compressors, gears, pumps and drivers.
Abstract
ISO 10438-1:2007 (Second edition) establishes general design, performance and auxiliary requirements for lubrication and shaft-sealing support systems used in the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. It is intended to be used together with the other parts of ISO 10438 (parts 2–4) where applicable and does not apply to internal combustion engines.
General information
- Status: Published (Second edition).
- Publication date: December 2007 (2007-12 / 15 December 2007 as the edition date).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 75.180.20 (Petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries).
- Edition / version: Edition 2 (2007).
- Number of pages: 61 pages (official ISO bibliographic listing).
Scope
Defines the general requirements for lubrication systems, oil-type shaft-sealing systems, dry-gas (face-type) shaft-sealing systems and control-oil systems and their auxiliaries used in petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industry installations. The standard covers system functions, basic design and performance aspects, interfaces with primary equipment (compressors, pumps, gears, drivers), and the relationship with parts 2–4 of ISO 10438 for more specific requirements. It excludes application to internal combustion engines.
Key topics and requirements
- General design and functional requirements for lubrication supply systems (reservoirs, filtration, pumps, piping, instrumentation).
- Requirements for oil-type shaft-sealing support systems and their auxiliaries (sealing fluids, reservoirs, heat exchangers, filtration, monitoring).
- Requirements for dry-gas (face-type) seal support systems (where applicable) and associated control-oil and buffer systems.
- Performance, monitoring and safety considerations (level, pressure, temperature, contamination control, alarm/interlock functions).
- Interfaces with driven equipment (compressors, pumps, gears) and design guidance for reliability and maintainability.
- Reference to complementary parts of the ISO 10438 series for detailed, part-specific requirements.
Typical use and users
Used by design and rotating-equipment engineers, OEMs, procurement and inspection teams, maintenance and reliability engineers, and technical authorities in oil, gas and petrochemical facilities. It is applied when specifying lubrication, shaft-seal and control-oil support systems for compressors, pumps, gearboxes and drivers to ensure consistent functional and safety requirements across installations.
Related standards
ISO 10438 is a multi-part series; Part 1 is complemented by Parts 2–4 which provide more detailed requirements for specific systems. Other related documents referenced for seal and compressor systems include ISO 10439 and ISO 10440 series. Note that some parts of the ISO 10438 family (for example Part 4: self-acting gas seal support systems) have been subject to later revision or replacement (for example subsequent work leading to ISO 6368 in later years for certain topics).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10438-1:2007 is the second-edition international standard giving general requirements for lubrication, shaft-sealing and control-oil support systems used in the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers general design, performance and auxiliary requirements for lubrication systems, oil-type and dry-gas face-type shaft-sealing support systems and control-oil systems serving compressors, pumps, gears and drivers, and indicates how to use the other parts of ISO 10438 for specific system types.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Rotating-equipment designers, OEMs, maintenance and reliability teams, procurement and inspection staff in oil, gas and petrochemical operations, and standards/engineering committees specifying or assessing support systems for rotating machinery.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10438-1:2007 is the second edition published in December 2007 and replaced the 2003 first edition. Some related parts of the ISO 10438 series have been revised or withdrawn and replaced by other standards over time; users should check the current status of each part before relying on them.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 10438 is a multi-part series (parts 1–4) covering general and part-specific requirements for lubrication, shaft-sealing and control-oil systems and auxiliaries; Part 1 provides the general requirements and is intended to be used with the other parts for detailed provisions.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Lubrication systems; shaft-sealing; dry-gas seals; control-oil systems; petroleum; petrochemical; natural gas; rotating equipment; compressors; pumps; gears; ISO 10438.
