Full title and description
ISO 10461:2005 — Gas cylinders — Seamless aluminium‑alloy gas cylinders — Periodic inspection and testing. International standard that specifies requirements for periodic inspection and testing to verify the integrity of seamless aluminium‑alloy transportable gas cylinders intended for compressed and liquefied gases under pressure.
Abstract
ISO 10461:2005 applies to seamless aluminium‑alloy transportable gas cylinders of water capacity from 0.5 l to 150 l (and, as far as practical, to cylinders of less than 0.5 l). It defines procedures and acceptance/rejection criteria for periodic inspection and testing (visual inspection, internal inspection where practicable, pressure testing and other examinations) to determine whether cylinders are suitable for further service. The standard excludes periodic inspection and testing of acetylene cylinders and of composite cylinders with aluminium‑alloy liners. ISO 10461:2005 was later withdrawn and superseded by ISO 18119:2018.

Scope
The standard covers the periodic inspection and testing requirements necessary to verify the integrity and safe continued use of seamless aluminium‑alloy transportable gas cylinders intended for compressed and liquefied gases under pressure (water capacity approximately 0.5 l to 150 l). It sets out inspection methods, tests, examination frequency and acceptance/rejection criteria and identifies types of cylinders and conditions to which the standard does not apply (notably acetylene cylinders and composite cylinders with aluminium‑alloy liners).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of applicability: water capacity range and exclusions (acetylene, composite‑lined cylinders).
- Periodic inspection procedures: external visual checks, internal inspection where practicable, condition of valves and fittings, corrosion and mechanical damage assessment.
- Periodic testing: pressure testing (hydrostatic or equivalent), leak testing and other verification tests as required.
- Acceptance and rejection criteria for defects, deformation, corrosion, neck and shoulder condition, and other failure modes.
- Marking, documentation and record keeping after inspection and testing (dates, test results, inspector identification and markings showing next test due).
- Intervals and frequency: guidance on inspection/test intervals and circumstances requiring out‑of‑schedule inspections (damage, change of service, adverse conditions).
- Limitations and safety precautions: handling and testing precautions, and restrictions on repairs and alterations.
Typical use and users
Used by cylinder manufacturers, gas suppliers, inspection and testing laboratories, maintenance and service organizations, certification and conformity assessment bodies, and national/regional regulators. It is referenced by maintenance procedures and in procurement/specifications where safe re‑use of aluminium‑alloy gas cylinders is required.
Related standards
ISO 10461:2005 was revised and withdrawn in favor of ISO 18119:2018 (Gas cylinders — Seamless steel and seamless aluminium‑alloy gas cylinders and tubes — Periodic inspection and testing). ISO 10461:2005 had an amendment (ISO 10461:2005/Amd 1:2006). ISO 18119:2018 consolidates periodic inspection/testing rules for both steel and aluminium‑alloy cylinders and has subsequent amendments (including amendments published in later years).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10461:2005 is an international standard that specified requirements for the periodic inspection and testing of seamless aluminium‑alloy transportable gas cylinders to determine fitness for further service.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers inspection methods (visual and internal where practicable), periodic testing (pressure/leak tests), acceptance and rejection criteria, marking and record‑keeping, and guidance on inspection intervals for cylinders of water capacity roughly 0.5 l to 150 l. It excludes acetylene cylinders and composite cylinders with aluminium‑alloy liners.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Cylinder manufacturers, gas producers and distributors, inspection/test laboratories, maintenance/service technicians, conformity assessment bodies and regulators use the standard to set inspection and testing procedures and acceptance criteria.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10461:2005 is withdrawn. It was officially withdrawn on 25 May 2018 and superseded by ISO 18119:2018, which covers periodic inspection and testing for both seamless steel and seamless aluminium‑alloy cylinders and tubes.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It was developed by ISO/TC 58/SC 4 (transportable gas cylinders) and relates to a family of cylinder standards and inspection/testing standards; its replacement, ISO 18119:2018, consolidated related requirements for different cylinder materials and sizes.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: gas cylinders; aluminium‑alloy; periodic inspection; periodic testing; hydrostatic test; leak test; acceptance criteria; cylinder maintenance; ISO 10461; ISO 18119.
