Full title and description

ISO 10518:1991 — Powered walk-behind and hand-held lawn trimmers and lawn edge trimmers — Mechanical safety requirements and test methods. Specifies terminology, mechanical safety requirements and test methods for powered walk-behind and hand-held lawn trimmers and edge trimmers, including requirements for construction, guarding, marking and instructions. Includes Annex A as an integral part of the standard.

Abstract

This International Standard gives terms and definitions and describes general construction, marking, instructions, cutting means, guarding of cutting means and mechanical strength for powered lawn trimmers and lawn edge trimmers. It also defines test methods to verify compliance with the mechanical safety requirements. An amendment (ISO 10518:1991/Amd 1:1994) provided additional detail for certain non-metallic cutting elements; both the base standard and the amendment have since been withdrawn.

General information

  • Status: Withdrawn (withdrawal stage recorded as 95.99)
  • Publication date: April 1991 (Edition 1)
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
  • ICS / categories: 65.060.70 (Horticultural equipment)
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (1991); amendment ISO 10518:1991/Amd 1:1994 (also withdrawn)
  • Number of pages: 8

Scope

Applies to powered walk-behind and hand-held lawn trimmers and lawn edge trimmers and establishes mechanical safety requirements and associated test methods. The standard covers terminology; general construction features relevant to user safety; marking and user instructions; types of cutting means and their guarding; and mechanical strength criteria to reduce hazards during normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. It does not apply to scissor-type or rigid-bladed implements where explicitly excluded by the amendment.

Key topics and requirements

  • Defined terms and scope of application for powered lawn trimmers and edge trimmers.
  • Requirements for general construction and materials affecting safety and durability.
  • Marking and instructions required to inform safe assembly, operation, maintenance and hazards.
  • Specifications for cutting means (including line and pivoting non-metallic cutters) and limits on cutting energy where applicable.
  • Guarding requirements to reduce user exposure to rotating or moving cutting elements.
  • Mechanical strength and structural integrity tests to verify safe performance.
  • Test methods and annex material (Annex A) that form an integral part of the standard.

Typical use and users

Used historically by manufacturers and designers of powered lawn and garden equipment to design and certify mechanical safety features; by conformity assessment and test laboratories for type testing; by safety engineers and regulatory bodies for conformity assessment and references in national regulations; and by procurement and quality teams when specifying safety requirements for walk-behind and hand-held trimmers and edge trimmers.

Related standards

Standards and series addressing garden-equipment safety and machinery safety are relevant as successors or complements, for example the ISO/TC 23/SC 13 family and later garden equipment safety standards (for example the ISO 5395 series and corresponding EN adaptations), general machine safety standards and national adoption documents. An amendment to ISO 10518 (ISO 10518:1991/Amd 1:1994) was issued for non-metallic cutting elements; both the base standard and the amendment are now withdrawn and may have been superseded by later ISO or regional (EN) standards addressing garden equipment safety.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10518:1991 is an International Standard that defined mechanical safety requirements and test methods for powered walk-behind and hand-held lawn trimmers and lawn edge trimmers (Edition 1, published April 1991).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers terminology, general construction and materials aspects affecting safety, marking and user instructions, cutting means and their guarding, mechanical strength requirements and the test methods needed to verify compliance; Annex A is an integral part of the document.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers and designers of lawn and edge trimmers, test and certification laboratories, safety engineers, regulatory authorities and procurement specialists historically used this standard as a technical safety reference.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 10518:1991 (and its 1994 amendment) have been withdrawn and are no longer current. Users should consult the ISO catalogue or their national standards body to identify the current standards or EN/ISO equivalents and any standards that have superseded or replaced ISO 10518:1991 for garden-equipment safety.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It was produced under ISO/TC 23/SC 13 (powered lawn and garden equipment) and is associated conceptually with other garden-equipment safety standards. Related families include later garden equipment standards such as the ISO 5395 series and regional EN/ISO adaptations addressing lawnmower and garden-equipment safety.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: lawn trimmers, edge trimmers, garden equipment safety, mechanical safety requirements, test methods, guarding, marking, ISO 10518.
