Full title and description
ISO 10545-4:2019 — Ceramic tiles — Part 4: Determination of modulus of rupture and breaking strength. This International Standard specifies a laboratory test method for determining the modulus of rupture (bending strength) and breaking strength of ceramic tiles and plates.
Abstract
This document defines the test procedure, specimen preparation, apparatus and calculation method used to measure bending (flexural) resistance and breaking load for all types of ceramic tiles. The standard is intended to provide reproducible results for quality control, specification and conformity testing. NOTE: ISO 13006 gives property requirements and additional information on tile classification and characteristics.
General information
- Status: Published (confirmed during systematic review in 2024).
- Publication date: 18 February 2019 (Edition 4, 2019-02).

Scope
ISO 10545-4:2019 specifies a test method for the determination of modulus of rupture and breaking strength applicable to all ceramic tiles and plates. It gives requirements for specimen selection and conditioning, test apparatus (span, loading configuration), test procedure, calculation of bending strength and the information to be reported with results. The standard is intended for laboratory testing of tile products for specification, quality control and conformity assessment.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of test objective: measure modulus of rupture (flexural strength) and breaking load for ceramic tiles.
- Specimen preparation and conditioning (selection of test pieces, pre-test conditioning to specified laboratory conditions).
- Apparatus and test geometry: span, support and loading arrangements for bending tests (as specified in the method).
- Test procedure: loading rate, number of specimens, method to record breaking load and deflection.
- Calculation method: formulae for modulus of rupture and conversion of breaking load to bending strength.
- Reporting requirements: identification of specimen, test conditions, results expressed in specified units and any deviations from the method.
- Normative references and links to related property requirements (ISO 13006 and other referenced documents such as ISO 48-2 for related test methods/equipment references).
Typical use and users
Used by materials and ceramic testing laboratories, tile manufacturers and their quality departments, product certifiers, test houses, architects and specifiers, building authorities and procurement teams to verify bending strength and breaking resistance of ceramic tiles for specification, compliance and quality control purposes. Test data from ISO 10545-4 are commonly referenced in product data sheets and conformity assessments.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 10545 series on ceramic tile test methods; related documents include other parts of ISO 10545 (covering water absorption, abrasion resistance, thermal shock, etc.) and ISO 13006 (tile classification and property requirements). Regional/adopted equivalents exist such as EN ISO 10545-4:2019 and national adoptions (e.g., BS EN ISO 10545-4).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10545-4:2019 is an International Standard that specifies the laboratory test method for determining the modulus of rupture and breaking strength (bending resistance) of ceramic tiles.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers specimen selection and conditioning, test apparatus and geometry, test procedure, calculation of modulus of rupture/bending strength and reporting of results for all ceramic tiles. It is intended to produce reproducible measurements for specification and conformity.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Ceramic and materials testing laboratories, tile manufacturers, conformity assessment bodies, architects, specifiers and building authorities use the standard to verify tile bending strength for product development, quality control and compliance.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10545-4:2019 (Edition 4) is the current version. It was published in February 2019 and was last reviewed and confirmed in 2024, so the 2019 edition remains current.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is one part of the ISO 10545 series of test methods for ceramic tiles; ISO 13006 is the complementary standard covering tile classification and property requirements, and many regions publish harmonized/adopted versions (EN/BS/other national adoptions).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: modulus of rupture, bending strength, breaking load, ceramic tiles, flexural test, test method, ISO 10545-4.
