Full title and description
ISO 10803:2024 — Design method for ductile iron pipes. This International Standard specifies methods for the structural design of ductile iron pipes used for conveying water, sewerage and other fluids, addressing cases with or without internal pressure and with or without earth and traffic loading; it is intended for use with ductile iron pipes manufactured in accordance with ISO 2531, ISO 7186 and ISO 16631.
Abstract
The standard defines calculation methods and design criteria for ductile iron pipe systems to ensure mechanical integrity under internal and external loads, including the influence of soil, bedding and traffic loads. It provides a harmonized basis for designers, manufacturers and authorities to assess pipe performance and safety.

Scope
This document specifies the design method for ductile iron pipes used to convey water, sewerage and other fluids — whether the pipes are subject to internal pressure or not and whether they are subject to earth and traffic loading or not. The method is applicable to ductile iron pipes manufactured in accordance with ISO 2531, ISO 7186 and ISO 16631 and is intended to be used by designers, manufacturers and approving authorities when assessing pipe strength and service performance.
Key topics and requirements
- Design calculations for internal pressure and combined loading (soil, earth, traffic).
- Material property considerations specific to ductile iron and interaction with relevant product standards (ISO 2531, ISO 7186, ISO 16631).
- Criteria for bedding, backfill and soil support influencing pipe embedment and load distribution.
- Safety factors, allowable stresses and design margins appropriate for long-term service.
- Assessment procedures for buried and above-ground installations where applicable.
The list above summarizes the principal technical topics the standard addresses.
Typical use and users
Civil and pipeline engineers, water and wastewater utilities, pipe manufacturers, construction contractors, consulting engineers and national standards bodies use this standard when designing, specifying or approving ductile iron pipe systems for potable water, sewerage and other fluid conveyance applications.
Related standards
Directly related product and test standards include ISO 2531 (ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and their joints), ISO 7186 and ISO 16631. ISO 10803:2024 replaces ISO 10803:2011 as the current edition.
