Full title and description
ISO 11644:2022 — Leather — Test for adhesion of finish. This International Standard specifies a laboratory method to measure the adhesion (peel strength) of a leather finish to the leather substrate or the adhesion between two adjacent finish layers; it is intended for finished flexible leathers with a smooth surface and a relatively thick continuous finish coat.
Abstract
The standard describes a peel-test procedure in which a portion of finished leather is bonded to an adherend plate (using a suitable adhesive film), then peeled away under controlled conditions to measure the force required to separate the finish from the leather. The procedure includes specimen conditioning, bonding time, test execution and reporting requirements; it excludes unpigmented leathers and articles without a continuous coating (for example nubuck, aniline, pull‑up, suede and perforated leather).
General information
- Status: Published (International Standard).
- Publication date: October 2022 (published 13–14 Oct 2022 in ISO records / national adoptions in 2022–2023).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO); prepared in collaboration with the leather technical community (IULTCS/CEN where adopted).
- ICS / categories: 59.140.30 — Leather and furs.
- Edition / version: Edition 3 (ISO 11644:2022), revising ISO 11644:2009.
- Number of pages: 12 pages (ISO published PDF pagination). Note: some regional/adopted versions (EN national publications) include additional front/back matter and may show larger page counts.
Scope
Specifies a method for measuring the adhesion of the finish to leather or the adhesion between two adjacent finish layers for finished flexible leathers with a smooth surface and a continuous, relatively thick finish coat. The standard is not applicable to unpigmented articles or articles without a continuous coating layer (examples excluded: nubuk, aniline, pull‑up, suede, perforated leather). Preliminary trials may be required to confirm that the specimen and finish are suitable for the bonding/peel technique.
Key topics and requirements
- Principle: bonding finished leather to an adherend plate using a heat‑reactivatable adhesive film and measuring the peel force over a defined distance.
- Specimen preparation and conditioning: dimensions, surface cleaning, and conditioning before bonding to ensure reproducible results.
- Bonding procedure: adhesive film selection, bonding pressure, temperature and bonding time controls.
- Test execution: peel speed, test angle, number of repeats and measurement of peel force (reported as force or mean values).
- Reporting: required test details, specimen description, environmental conditions, and presentation of results (individual and averaged values, any deviations from the method).
- Exclusions and limitations: not suitable for unpigmented or non‑continuous coatings and finishes that allow adhesive penetration; preliminary validation recommended for novel finishes.
Typical use and users
Used by leather test laboratories, quality control departments of tanneries and leather‑product manufacturers, material researchers and certification bodies. Typical applications include production quality checks on finished leather (footwear, upholstery, garments, leather goods), development of new finishing systems, and verification of finish durability where adhesion is a critical property. National standards bodies and conformity assessment organizations also use the standard when adopting regional or national versions.
Related standards
ISO 11644:2022 revises and replaces ISO 11644:2009 (and the earlier 1993 edition). Closely related leather test standards and series in the same ICS area include methods for colour fastness, physical and mechanical tests for leather and other finish/performance assessments; regional adoptions appear as EN ISO / national standards. Users should consult adjacent ISO leather standards and any applicable EN national variants for complementary tests and harmonized reporting.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 11644:2022 is an ISO International Standard that specifies a laboratory test method for measuring the adhesion (peel strength) of a finish coat on leather or between finish layers.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers specimen preparation, bonding to an adherend plate using an adhesive film, controlled peel testing (conditions such as bonding time, temperature, peel speed), measurement and reporting of adhesion results; it excludes unpigmented leathers and articles without continuous coating layers.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Leather testing laboratories, tanneries, product manufacturers (footwear, furniture, garments, accessories), R&D teams developing finishes, and conformity assessment bodies performing quality verification or national/regional adoptions.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: Current — ISO 11644:2022 is the third edition (published October 2022) and supersedes ISO 11644:2009 (and the earlier 1993 edition). National/adopted EN versions were published in 2022–2023.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It belongs to the family of ISO leather test standards (ICS 59.140.30) and is commonly published alongside other leather physical and colour fastness test methods; regional bodies often adopt it as EN ISO 11644 for use in Europe.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Leather, adhesion, finish, peel test, bonding, specimen conditioning, IULTCS, leather testing.
