Full title and description
ISO 13938-1:2019 — Textiles — Bursting properties of fabrics — Part 1: Hydraulic method for determination of bursting strength and bursting distension. This International Standard specifies a hydraulic (liquid) method and apparatus for determining the bursting pressure, bursting strength and bursting distension (height/volume at burst) of knitted, woven, nonwoven and laminated textile fabrics, for conditioned or wet specimens.
Abstract
ISO 13938-1:2019 defines the test principle, apparatus, specimen preparation, test procedure, measurement accuracy and reporting requirements for a constant‑rate hydraulic bursting test. A fabric specimen is clamped over an expandable membrane and fluid pressure is increased at a controlled volumetric rate until the specimen ruptures; results are reported as corrected bursting pressure (kPa) and bursting distension (height in mm and/or volume in cm3). The hydraulic method is particularly suitable where high bursting pressures are expected and is comparable to pneumatic methods for most apparel fabrics up to roughly 800 kPa.

Scope
This standard specifies a hydraulic method for measuring bursting strength and bursting distension of textile fabrics. It applies to knitted, woven, nonwoven and laminated fabrics and can be used for other fabric types by agreement. Tests may be carried out on specimens in the conditioned state (per ISO 139) or in the wet state (specified soaking and water quality). The document covers apparatus design and performance, test areas and clamping, pumping/flow rates, measurement and calibration requirements, test procedure, corrections (membrane subtraction), and reporting conventions.
Key topics and requirements
- Test principle: specimen clamped over an elastic diaphragm; hydraulic pressure increased at a controlled volumetric rate until rupture.
- Apparatus requirements: constant volumetric pump, expandable membrane (≤ 2 mm), specified test surface area (nominal 50 cm2 / ≈79.8 mm diameter with alternatives by agreement), accurate clamping ring, and safety enclosure.
- Volumetric rates and timing: typical flow rates (e.g., ~100–500 cm3/min ±10%) and guidance for time-to-burst when volume is not measured.
- Measurement accuracy: pressure indication accuracy (typically ±2% of full scale above the lower range), burst height accuracy (±1 mm), and volume indication accuracy (±2% if used).
- Specimen preparation and conditioning: conditioned atmosphere per ISO 139 or specified wetting procedure (water type and temperature); avoidance of damaged edges or selvedges.
- Data handling: subtraction of membrane pressure to obtain bursting strength, reporting of arithmetic means, rounding rules, optional coefficient of variation and confidence limits.
- Metrological control & safety: calibration/verification of instruments (measurement management) and safe enclosures for operators during tests.
Typical use and users
ISO 13938-1:2019 is used by textile manufacturers, converters and finishers for quality control and specification testing; independent test laboratories and certification bodies for product evaluation; research & development teams for material comparison and product development; procurement and specification engineers assessing fabric performance; and manufacturers of testing equipment who design hydraulic burst testers. It is especially relevant where high bursting pressures are expected (technical textiles, laminated materials, protective clothing).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 13938-1:2019 is an international standard that specifies a hydraulic method for determining the bursting strength and bursting distension of textile fabrics.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the test principle, required apparatus and performance, specimen preparation and conditioning, test procedure, measurement accuracy, calculations (including membrane correction), reporting requirements and safety/verification considerations for the hydraulic burst test.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Textile manufacturers, independent testing and certification laboratories, R&D teams, procurement/specification engineers, and test-equipment manufacturers use this standard for product testing, quality control and comparative evaluations.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2019 edition (Edition 2) is the current published version and replaces ISO 13938-1:1999. The standard is subject to periodic review by ISO.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes. ISO 13938 is published in parts; Part 1 is the hydraulic method (this document) and Part 2 specifies a pneumatic method for determination of bursting properties. Other related ISO documents address conditioning and test environment.
