Full title and description
ISO 14617-2:2025 — Graphical symbols for diagrams — Part 2: Graphical symbols. This part of the ISO 14617 series provides a comprehensive symbol library for diagrams related to industrial components, products and processing; it contains the defined graphical symbols (organized in Tables 1 to 149), normative application rules (Annex A) and informative annexes including deleted-symbols and an alphabetical index.
Abstract
This document specifies graphical symbols for diagrams related to industrial components, products and processing and constitutes a symbol library for use in diagrams. It is intended to be used together with ISO 14617-1 (general rules and presentation) and includes application guidance in a normative annex. The standard excludes certain domains (for example fluid power, measurement/control function symbols and electrotechnical objects) which are covered by other standards/databases.
General information
- Status: Published.
- Publication date: 25 April 2025.
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 01.080.30 (Drawings, plans and maps).
- Edition / version: Edition 2 (2025).
- Number of pages: 237.
Scope
ISO 14617-2:2025 provides the graphical symbols of general application forming a symbol library (Tables 1–149) for building complete symbols used in technical diagrams for industrial components and processing. It gives the symbols themselves and application rules (normative Annex A) while leaving general preparation and presentation rules to ISO 14617-1. It does not apply to fluid-power symbols (see ISO 1219-1), electrotechnical object symbols (see the IEC 60617 database) or to measurement and control function symbols. The edition also consolidates and replaces multiple earlier part-specific publications of the ISO 14617 series.
Key topics and requirements
- Comprehensive symbol library: Tables 1–149 presenting graphical symbols for a wide range of industrial components and diagram functions.
- Normative application rules: Annex A defines how the symbols are to be applied in diagrams.
- Conformance with presentation rules: Symbols are intended to be used together with ISO 14617-1 (general rules and guidance for preparation and presentation).
- Scope exclusions and cross-references: Explicitly excludes domains covered by ISO 1219-1 (fluid power) and IEC 60617 (electrotechnical symbols); users must refer to those standards/databases where appropriate.
- Indexing and maintenance: Informative Annex B lists symbols deleted from previous editions and Annex C provides an alphabetical index to the symbols defined in this part.
- Consolidation: This 2025 edition consolidates numerous previous part-specific standards from the ISO 14617 series into updated, centrally maintained content.
Typical use and users
Engineers, technical drafters, CAD librarians, process designers, schematic and diagram authors, standards committees and educators use this standard to select and apply consistent graphical symbols in technical diagrams, drawings and documentation for industrial equipment, piping and process systems.
Related standards
ISO 14617 is a series — see ISO 14617-1:2025 (General rules) for presentation and preparation rules. Related and referenced publications include ISO 1219-1 (fluid power symbols) and the IEC 60617 graphical symbol database for electrotechnical objects; other ISO 14617 parts (legacy parts for valves, measurement, etc.) were consolidated or superseded by this edition.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 14617-2:2025 is Part 2 of the ISO 14617 series; it provides a library of graphical symbols for diagrams used to represent industrial components, products and processing in technical diagrams and schematics.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the graphical symbols themselves (organized in Tables 1–149) and provides application rules in a normative annex. It does not cover fluid-power symbols, certain measurement/control function symbols, or electrotechnical symbols, which are covered by other standards/databases.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Technical drafters, design engineers, CAD administrators, process and systems engineers, standards authors and educators who need consistent, standardized symbols for diagrams and documentation.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: This edition is current — ISO 14617-2:2025 was published on 25 April 2025. It replaces earlier editions/part-specific standards from the ISO 14617 series that were withdrawn or consolidated into this edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 14617 is a multi-part series. Part 1 provides general rules (ISO 14617-1:2025) and other parts address specific families of symbols; the 2025 updates consolidate several earlier part-level documents into the revised series structure.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Graphical symbols, symbol library, diagrams, schematics, ISO 14617, application rules, industrial components, technical drawings.
