Full title and description
Road vehicles — Vehicle dynamics test methods — Part 1: General conditions for passenger cars. This International Standard defines the general conditions and requirements to be applied when determining vehicle dynamics properties of passenger cars and light trucks (as defined in ISO 3833), covering measurement variables, equipment, environment, vehicle preparation and reporting.
Abstract
This document specifies general conditions that apply when vehicle dynamics properties are determined according to ISO test methods. In particular it addresses variables and reference systems; measuring equipment and transducer installation; analogue and digital data processing; environment (test track and wind velocity); test vehicle preparation (tyres, loading, drivetrain, active systems); initial driving; and the content of test reports. These general conditions apply unless a specific test-method standard requires other conditions.

Scope
Applies to passenger cars (ISO 3833 definition) and light trucks. The standard establishes the common, repeatable baseline conditions for vehicle dynamics test methods so that measured properties (steady-state and transient handling, stability and related dynamic characteristics) are comparable and reproducible across laboratories and test programs. It is intended for road tests and, where appropriate, can be applied to bench tests; specific test-method standards may override particular requirements.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of variables and reference coordinate systems used in vehicle-dynamics measurements.
- Requirements for measuring equipment, transducer installation and calibration.
- Data acquisition and processing requirements for analogue and digital systems.
- Environmental and test-track conditions, including wind-velocity limits and track surface criteria.
- Test-vehicle preparation: tyre specification, vehicle loading, operating components and drivetrain settings.
- Guidance for handling active systems (ESP, traction control, ADAS) during tests.
- Procedures for initial driving, warm-up, and preconditioning runs.
- Test-report content: mandatory general data and documented test conditions for traceability and comparison.
Typical use and users
Used by vehicle manufacturers, test engineers, independent test laboratories, research institutes and regulators to define and harmonize baseline test conditions for handling, stability and ride-related vehicle-dynamics measurements. Also used by quality and validation teams when comparing vehicle variants or verifying design changes.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 15037 series of vehicle-dynamics test-method documents. Notable related documents include ISO 15037-2 (general conditions for heavy vehicles and buses) and ISO 15037-3 (general conditions for passenger-car ride comfort tests). The standard also references vehicle classification and terminology in ISO 3833.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 15037-1:2019 is an International Standard that specifies the general conditions to be applied when performing vehicle-dynamics tests on passenger cars and light trucks, providing baseline requirements for measurements, equipment, environment and reporting.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers variables and reference systems, measuring equipment and transducer installation, analogue and digital data processing, test-track and environmental requirements (including wind), vehicle preparation (tyres, loading, drivetrain, active systems), initial driving and the content of test reports.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Vehicle OEM test engineers, independent and manufacturer test laboratories, regulators, certification bodies, and research organizations involved in vehicle-dynamics measurement and validation.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: This is the 3rd edition published in January 2019 with a corrected English version in March 2019. According to ISO lifecycle information it is published and was scheduled for periodic review; users should check national or ISO catalogs for any amendments or revisions since 2019.
Q: Is it part of a series?
