Full title and description
ISO 15649:2001 — Petroleum and natural gas industries — Piping. International standard specifying requirements for the design, construction, inspection and testing of piping used within petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas processing facilities and associated packaged equipment.
Abstract
This International Standard specifies requirements for the design and construction of piping for the petroleum and natural gas industries, including associated inspection and testing. It is applicable to piping within facilities engaged in the processing or handling of chemical, petroleum, natural gas or related products (for example refineries, loading terminals, natural gas processing plants including LNG facilities, offshore production platforms, chemical plants and tank farms). The standard also applies to packaged equipment piping that interconnects pieces or stages of packaged assemblies. It does not apply to transportation pipelines and associated pipeline plant.
General information
- Status: Published (confirmed on review; current edition remains in force)
- Publication date: June 2001
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
- ICS / categories: 75.200 — Equipment for petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries
- Edition / version: Edition 1 (2001)
- Number of pages: 15 (ISO original publication; some national/adopted versions include additional front matter)
Scope
Specifies requirements and recommendations for the design and construction of piping intended for use within processing and handling facilities for petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas products. The scope covers piping systems inside plants and packaged equipment assemblies but explicitly excludes transportation pipelines and associated pipeline plant (for example mainline transmission pipelines and their associated compressor/tank farm systems outside plant boundaries).
Key topics and requirements
- Design principles for piping used in petroleum and natural gas processing facilities
- Materials selection and general construction requirements appropriate to hydrocarbon service
- Welding, jointing and fabrication guidance consistent with safe pressure-retaining practice
- Inspection and testing requirements (pressure testing, non-destructive examination and documentation)
- Requirements for packaged equipment piping that interconnects items within assemblies
- Exclusions and interface clarifications for transportation pipelines and pipeline plant
- Applicability examples: refineries, LNG and natural gas processing plants, offshore platforms, terminals and tank farms
Typical use and users
Used by plant designers, piping engineers, EPC contractors, inspection and testing organizations, procurement/specification authors, operations and maintenance teams, and regulatory/compliance personnel involved in on-site piping systems in refineries, gas processing facilities, petrochemical plants, offshore installations, LNG plants and packaged equipment suppliers.
Related standards
Relevant norms and codes that are commonly used alongside ISO 15649:2001 include other ISO standards for petroleum and natural gas industries (for example ISO 13623 for pipeline transportation systems and ISO 15156 for materials in H2S-containing environments), national piping and welding codes and industry standards such as ASME B31.3 (process piping), API piping and materials standards, and applicable NACE/ISO corrosion and materials guidelines.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 15649:2001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for the design, construction, inspection and testing of piping used within petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas processing facilities.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers piping systems inside processing and handling facilities and packaged equipment piping that interconnects components within assemblies. It does not cover transportation pipelines and associated pipeline plant located outside facility boundaries.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Piping and process engineers, EPC contractors, manufacturing and packaged-equipment suppliers, inspection and testing bodies, maintenance and operations teams, and compliance/standards authors working in the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 15649:2001 is the first (and published) edition from 2001. It has been subject to periodic review and, as of its last systematic confirmation, remains a published/active ISO standard. Users should check the national or ISO catalogues for the latest confirmation or any subsequent revisions before relying on it for new projects.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: ISO 15649:2001 is a stand-alone standard focused on piping for petroleum and natural gas industries. It sits within the broader family of ISO/TC 67 standards for petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries and is typically used alongside related multi-part standards (for example ISO 15156 series for materials and ISO 13623 for pipeline systems).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Piping, petroleum, natural gas, piping design, piping construction, inspection, testing, packaged equipment piping, refinery, LNG, offshore.
