Full title and description
ISO 16537:2012 — Thermal insulating products for building applications — Determination of shear behaviour. This International Standard specifies the equipment and procedures for determining the shear behaviour of thermal insulating products used in building applications; the test measures the effects of applying two opposite parallel forces to the major faces of a test specimen (conventionally called "shear").
Abstract
This standard defines the test apparatus, specimen preparation, procedure, calculation and reporting required to assess the shear behaviour of thermal insulating products (for example boards and panels used in walls and external thermal insulation systems). The tests are intended to represent tangential stresses encountered in many building applications rather than to measure pure shear.

Scope
Applies to thermal insulating products for building applications and specifies the equipment and procedures to determine shear behaviour under two opposite parallel forces applied to the major faces of a specimen. The method is intended to represent tangential stresses encountered in service (e.g., in walls and external insulation systems) and is not a pure shear test by definition.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of principle and scope of the shear test for thermal insulating products.
- Required test apparatus and fixtures for applying opposite parallel forces to specimen faces.
- Preparation, dimensions and conditioning of test specimens before testing.
- Step-by-step test procedure, loading rates and data collection.
- Calculation and expression of results (reported shear strength/behaviour) and reporting requirements.
- Notes on accuracy, repeatability and interpretation for building applications (e.g., ETICS and wall systems).
Summary of the method and procedural requirements is based on the official ISO publication.
Typical use and users
Used by materials and building-products test laboratories, manufacturers of thermal insulation (boards, panels, mineral wool, EPS/XPS, etc.), product certification bodies, specifiers and consultants assessing mechanical behaviour of insulation in wall and façade systems, and standards developers. The test helps manufacturers and specifiers verify that products meet mechanical performance expectations for installation and in-service loads.
Related standards
ISO 16537:2012 is aligned with corresponding European standard EN 12090:2013 (Thermal insulating products for building applications — Determination of shear behaviour), and sits alongside other ISO/CEN methods for mechanical testing of insulation products (compression, tensile, bending and other mechanical properties used for product characterization and compliance).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 16537:2012 is an international test method that specifies equipment, specimen preparation and procedures to determine the shear behaviour of thermal insulating products used in building applications.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the principle of the shear test (application of two opposite parallel forces to major faces), required apparatus, specimen dimensions and conditioning, test procedure, calculation/expression of results and reporting. The method represents tangential stresses encountered in building use rather than pure shear.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Product test laboratories, insulation manufacturers, certification bodies, building-materials specifiers and consultants assessing mechanical performance of insulation in walls and façade systems.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2012 edition (Edition 1) is published and was last reviewed and confirmed in 2023, so the document remains current (not withdrawn or superseded as of the confirmation date).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is one of a group of ISO/CEN standards that specify mechanical and physical test methods for thermal insulating products (compression, tensile, bending, shear and related tests) and is maintained under ISO/TC 163/SC 1. Equivalent or identical European standard: EN 12090:2013.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Thermal insulating products; shear behaviour; test method; mechanical properties; ETICS; insulation boards; specimen preparation; ISO 16537.
