Full title and description

Corrosion of metals and alloys — Corrosion and fouling in industrial cooling water systems — Part 2: Evaluation of the performance of cooling water treatment programmes using a pilot-scale test rig. This International Standard specifies principles, reagents and materials, test apparatus, test methods, evaluation of results and reporting requirements for pilot-scale tests used to assess cooling water treatment programmes for open recirculating systems.

Abstract

This document provides a standardized pilot-test method to evaluate the effectiveness of corrosion and fouling control programmes for open recirculating cooling water systems. It is primarily laboratory-based but the heat-exchanger test facility described can also be used for on-site evaluation; it excludes heat exchangers where the cooling water is on the shell side (external to the tubes). The standard sets out test apparatus, reagents, procedures, result evaluation and test-report requirements.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: December 2024 (ISO publication: 2024-12).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 77.060 (Corrosion of metals).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2024).
  • Number of pages: 20 (ISO published text). Note: some national/adopted versions (for example BS/EN adoptions) list additional national foreword material and show a larger page count (e.g., 30 pages in some listings).

Scope

Defines a pilot-scale testing method to evaluate performance of cooling water treatment programmes applied to open recirculating cooling water systems. The standard details the design and use of a heat-exchanger test rig, required reagents and materials, test procedures, criteria for evaluating corrosion and fouling control, and the content required in test reports. It does not apply to heat exchangers with cooling water on the shell side (external to tubes).

Key topics and requirements

  • Principles and objectives for pilot-scale evaluation of corrosion and fouling control programmes.
  • Specification of reagents, test materials and representative test coupons and tubing.
  • Design and operation requirements for a heat-exchanger test rig used in laboratory or on-site pilot testing.
  • Detailed test procedures for measuring corrosion, fouling and inhibitor performance under controlled recirculating conditions.
  • Evaluation methods, acceptance criteria and statistical reporting conventions for test results.
  • Requirements for the contents and format of pilot-test reports to ensure reproducibility and comparability.

Typical use and users

Used by corrosion engineers, cooling-system operators, water-treatment chemical suppliers, independent testing laboratories, R&D groups and procurement/specification teams to select and validate treatment programmes for open recirculating cooling water systems and to compare inhibitor performance under controlled pilot conditions. National standards bodies and conformity assessment organizations may also rely on the standard when specifying test methods.

Related standards

ISO 16784 is a multi-part series. Part 1 (ISO 16784-1:2024) provides guidelines and requirements for conducting pilot-scale evaluations of corrosion and fouling control additives, and is complementary to Part 2 (the test-rig evaluation procedures described here). National adoptions (for example BS EN ISO 16784-2:2024) implement the ISO text with national forewords and may carry different page counts. The 2024 edition replaces the previous edition (ISO 16784-2:2006).

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 16784-2:2024 is an International Standard that specifies pilot-scale test methods and test-rig requirements to evaluate the performance of cooling water treatment programmes for open recirculating cooling water systems.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the principles, required reagents and materials, the design and operation of a heat-exchanger pilot test rig, test procedures for measuring corrosion and fouling performance, evaluation of results and minimum contents for test reports. It excludes heat exchangers with cooling water on the shell side.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Corrosion and materials engineers, water-treatment suppliers, plant operators, independent test laboratories, R&D teams and standards/pecification writers use the standard to design pilot tests, compare treatment programmes and support procurement/specification decisions.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: It is current. The 2024 edition (Edition 2) was published in December 2024 and replaces the earlier edition (ISO 16784-2:2006).

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 16784 is a multi-part series addressing pilot-scale evaluation of corrosion and fouling control in industrial cooling water systems; see ISO 16784-1:2024 for complementary guidelines and requirements.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Corrosion, fouling, cooling water systems, pilot-scale testing, heat-exchanger test rig, water treatment programmes, corrosion inhibitors.
