Full title and description

Safety of amusement rides and amusement devices — Part 1: Design and manufacture. This International Standard specifies minimum requirements for the safe design, calculation, manufacture and installation of mobile, temporary or permanently installed amusement ride machinery and structures intended for use by persons as a leisure activity (examples: roundabouts, swings, boats, Ferris wheels, roller coasters, chutes, booths and structures for artistic aerial displays). It provides engineering, structural and manufacturing requirements to support safe lifecycle performance.

Abstract

This document sets out the minimum technical requirements and verification principles necessary to ensure amusement rides and devices are designed and manufactured to a level of safety appropriate for public use. It covers structural design, load and strength calculations, mechanical and safety-related systems, restraints and containment, documentation and marking, and requirements for installation and acceptance testing. It also identifies types of equipment and situations excluded from its scope.

Scope

Specifies minimum requirements to ensure the safe design, calculation, manufacture and installation of mobile, temporary or permanently installed amusement ride machinery and structures intended for use by persons as a leisure activity. The standard applies to a wide range of passenger-carrying devices (for example roundabouts, swings, Ferris wheels and roller coasters) intended for repeated installation or permanent installation in fairgrounds, amusement parks or other locations. It explicitly excludes certain items such as construction scaffolding, removable agricultural structures, simple coin-operated children's devices for up to three children, and many purely recreational structures such as waterslides, summer toboggan runs, standard playground equipment, rope courses, climbing walls, inflatables and trampolines; users are directed to the appropriate standards for those items.

Key topics and requirements

  • Design principles and safe-by-design engineering for passenger-carrying amusement devices.
  • Loads, strength and structural integrity — static, dynamic and fatigue considerations.
  • Calculation methods, factor-of-safety conventions and verification testing.
  • Mechanical systems, drives, brakes and safety-related control systems requirements.
  • Restraints, containment, clearance envelopes and passenger interface design.
  • Manufacturing quality controls, welding and fastener guidance.
  • Installation, assembly, pre‑commissioning and acceptance testing requirements.
  • Documentation, markings, user information and maintenance instructions to support safe operation.
  • Requirements for inspection planning and handover records (to be read in conjunction with Parts 2 and 3 of the series).

Typical use and users

Used by ride designers and structural/mechanical engineers, amusement-ride manufacturers, quality and production managers, independent inspection bodies, certification and conformity assessment organizations, park operators and safety regulators. It serves as a technical reference for design validation, manufacturer quality systems, acceptance testing and for contractual specifications between purchasers and suppliers.

Related standards

ISO 17842 is a multi-part series. Key related parts include ISO 17842-2 (Operation, maintenance and use) and ISO 17842-3 (Requirements for inspection during design, manufacture, operation and use). Other commonly referenced documents in this field include regional and national standards such as EN 13814 (European safety of amusement rides and devices) and ASTM practice F2291 (Standard Practice for Design of Amusement Rides and Devices). National adoptions and identical publications (for example BS ISO variants) and sector-specific guidance documents are frequently used alongside ISO 17842-1.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 17842-1:2023 is Part 1 of the ISO series dealing with the safety of amusement rides and amusement devices, focusing on requirements for design and manufacture to ensure safe structural and mechanical performance for passenger‑carrying devices.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers minimum technical requirements for design calculations, structural strength and fatigue, mechanical and safety-related systems, restraints and containment, manufacturing practices, installation and pre-commissioning testing. It also lists equipment and device types that are excluded and should be covered by other standards.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Designers, manufacturers, inspection bodies, operators, and regulatory/certification authorities use this standard to set or verify safe design and manufacturing practices for amusement rides. It is used both as a normative design reference and as part of contractual and conformity assessment requirements.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 17842-1:2023 is the current published edition (Edition 2, published September 2023). It replaces the earlier 2015 edition. Users should check national adoption and amendment notices for later changes.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 17842 is a multi-part series. Part 1 addresses design and manufacture, Part 2 addresses operation and use (including maintenance and safe operation), and Part 3 addresses inspection requirements. These parts are intended to be used together for full lifecycle safety coverage.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: amusement rides, amusement devices, design, manufacture, structural safety, loads, restraints, inspection, installation, ISO 17842
