Full title and description
Health informatics — Automatic identification and data capture marking and labelling — Subject of care and individual provider identification. This International Standard defines requirements and good practices for identifying and labelling the Subject of Care (SoC) and the Individual Provider on objects such as wristbands, tags or other items to enable reliable automatic data capture (AIDC) in the delivery-of-care process.
Abstract
This document specifies data structures, semantics and practical guidance to support unique SoC and provider identification using AIDC data carriers (for example barcodes or RFID). It is based on the GS1 system of standards (other systems such as ISBT 128 are acknowledged but not covered) and is intended to reduce variability and unsafe workarounds at the point of care. It complements ISO/TS 22220 and ISO/TS 27527.

Scope
The standard covers identification and labelling practices for the Subject of Care and Individual Provider to support automatic data capture during care delivery. It specifies how to manage identifiers, recommended data structures and semantics, and how to apply GS1-based AIDC solutions to ensure globally unique identification for patient safety, workflow efficiency and accurate recording in health records. It is intended as a practical reference for organizations planning to implement or improve AIDC at the point of care.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of SoC (Subject of Care) and Individual Provider identifiers and their intended uses.
- Recommended AIDC data carriers and encodings (barcode/RFID usage guidance tied to GS1 specifications).
- Data structures and semantics to support unique, globally recognizable identifiers for patients and providers.
- Good-practice guidance to avoid local workarounds that undermine AIDC accuracy and patient safety.
- Guidance on integrating SoC/provider identifiers with health records and care-delivery workflows.
- References and alignment with related ISO deliverables (for example ISO/TS 22220, ISO/TS 27527) and GS1 guidance.
These topics aim to ensure consistent implementation of AIDC for patient identification and provider attribution in clinical settings.
Typical use and users
Primary users include hospitals, clinics and other care providers; health IT vendors and integrators; medical device and wristband/tag manufacturers; standards and regulatory bodies; and project teams implementing AIDC-based patient identification and workflow automation. The standard is used to design, procure and validate patient-identification and provider-identification solutions at the point of care.
Related standards
Closely related documents and deliverables include ISO/TS 22220 (unique identifiers for persons in health care), ISO/TS 27527 (data structures for AIDC in health care), the withdrawn ISO/TS 18530:2014 (previous technical specification), and GS1 system specifications referenced for practical encoding and implementation. Implementers typically consult these in combination.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 18530:2021 is an international standard that defines identification and labelling practices for the Subject of Care (patient) and Individual Provider to enable reliable automatic data capture in healthcare settings.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers data structures, semantics, recommended use of AIDC carriers (for example GS1-based barcodes and RFID), and practical guidance to ensure unique identification, safe workflows and accurate recording in health records.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Hospitals, clinics, healthcare IT vendors and integrators, device and label manufacturers, and standards/regulatory stakeholders involved in patient identification and point-of-care automation.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 18530:2021 is the current International Standard published in January 2021; it superseded and replaced ISO/TS 18530:2014 (the earlier Technical Specification). The ISO record shows the standard was reviewed and confirmed in 2023, so the 2021 edition remains current.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is part of the ISO health informatics family of deliverables maintained by ISO/TC 215 and is intended to be used alongside related documents such as ISO/TS 22220 and ISO/TS 27527 for comprehensive patient and provider identification and data-capture guidance.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Health informatics, AIDC, subject of care, individual provider, patient identification, GS1, barcode, RFID, labelling, data structures, semantics.
