Full title and description
ISO 18604:2013 — Packaging and the environment — Material recycling. Specifies requirements and assessment procedures for packaging to be classified as recoverable by material recycling, taking account of ongoing developments in packaging and recycling technologies.
Abstract
ISO 18604:2013 sets out the requirements that packaging must meet to be considered recoverable in the form of material recycling and describes procedures for assessing whether those requirements are met. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the general application procedure given in ISO 18601.
General information
- Status: Published (confirmed).
- Publication date: January 2013.
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 55.020 (Packaging and distribution of goods in general).
- Edition / version: Edition 1 (2013).
- Number of pages: 18 pages.
Scope
This International Standard specifies the requirements for packaging to be classified as recoverable in the form of material recycling, and sets out procedures for assessment of meeting its requirements. It does not by itself provide presumption of compliance; the procedure for applying ISO 18604 is contained in ISO 18601.
Key topics and requirements
- Criteria for classifying packaging as recoverable via material recycling (design and material considerations).
- Assessment procedures to demonstrate compliance with material-recycling recoverability.
- Compatibility with evolving recycling technologies and material recovery processes.
- Requirement that ISO 18604 be applied following the procedural framework in ISO 18601.
Typical use and users
Used by packaging designers, manufacturers, brand owners, recyclers, compliance officers and regulatory bodies to evaluate and demonstrate that packaging is recoverable by material recycling. Also used by sustainability teams and procurement specialists when specifying packaging to meet environmental objectives.
Related standards
ISO 18604 is part of the ISO 18600 series on packaging and the environment. Closely related standards include ISO 18601 (General requirements for the use of ISO standards in the field of packaging and the environment), ISO 18602 (Optimization of the packaging system), ISO 18603 (Reuse), ISO 18605 (Energy recovery) and ISO 18606 (Material specifications for packaging).
