Full title and description
ISO 22002-7:2025 — Prerequisite programmes on food safety — Part 7: Retail and wholesale. This International Standard specifies requirements for establishing, implementing and maintaining prerequisite programmes (PRPs) to control food‑safety hazards in the retail part of the food chain, including wholesalers, food banks and similar organisations.
Abstract
This document sets out the PRP requirements that retail and wholesale organisations should use to prevent, reduce or control food‑safety hazards. It is applicable to organisations of all sizes and complexity within the retail/wholesale sector, and it allows justified exclusions where they do not adversely impact food safety.

Scope
The standard applies to the retail segment of the food chain — including retail stores, wholesalers, food banks and related organisations — and provides PRP requirements to control hazards that could affect food safety within those operations. It does not apply to other parts of the food supply chain; organisations may document justified exclusions provided food safety is not compromised.
Key topics and requirements

- Storage, temperature control and stock rotation (including chilled/frozen management)
- Allergen management, labelling and separation
- Cleaning, sanitation and pest‑control programmes
- Traceability, labelling, recall and withdrawal readiness
- Waste management, donation handling (food banks) and transport within retail/wholesale activities
- Record keeping, verification and continuous review of PRPs
Typical use and users
Intended for retail and wholesale food businesses (supermarkets, convenience stores, wholesalers, food banks and similar operators). Primary users include food‑safety managers, quality assurance teams, store operations managers, contractors and consultants who implement or audit PRPs in retail/wholesale settings.
Related standards
This part complements ISO 22000 (food safety management systems) by providing sector‑specific PRP requirements for retail/wholesale operations and is one element of the broader ISO 22002 series of prerequisite programme standards for different sectors of the food and feed chain. Other ISO 22002 parts address manufacturing, catering, packaging and related sectors. Organisations commonly implement ISO 22002 parts together with ISO 22000 to build a complete food‑safety management approach.
