What is BS 5546:2010? BS 5546 gives the requirements for the selection, installation, inspection, commissioning and maintenance of gas-powered hot-water supply systems. This includes water heaters with a rated power of more than 70 kW, based on net calorific value. The standard also applies to water-heating devices using 1st, 2nd or 3rd family gases that supply hot water for domestic purposes – in either domestic or commercial dwellings. BS 5546 covers current hot-water supply systems with a CE mark, as well as previously used appliances without this marking. How does it work? BS 5546 first looks at competence, before explaining what should be taken into account when selecting equipment during the pre-installation phase. The standard then focuses on the installation and location of water-heating systems and concludes with key points on post-installation. What’s new? BS 5546 replaces BS 5546:2000+Amendment 1:2005 which is now withdrawn. Who should buy it?
