BS 594-1:2005 specifies requirements for mixtures of hot rolled asphalt to be laid as surface course, regulating course, binder course or base (roadbase) on roads and other paved areas, excluding heavy duty airfield pavements. It also specifies requirements for coated chippings, but excludes requirements for site-specific properties such as polished stone values and abrasion values of aggregates. NOTE The terms “base (roadbase)”, “binder course” and “surface course” are used throughout this standard in place of the traditional terms “roadbase”, “basecourse” and “wearing course” respectively to encourage use of the new terminology which will be used in European asphalt standards to be introduced in the near future.
