Full title and description
UNE-EN ISO 17660-1:2008 — Welding — Welding of reinforcing steel — Part 1: Load-bearing welded joints. This is the Spanish national adoption (UNE) of the international standard ISO 17660-1:2006; it specifies requirements for welding of weldable reinforcing steel (including stainless reinforcing steel) for load-bearing joints used in reinforced concrete structures, covering materials, design, execution, personnel qualifications, quality assurance, examination and testing, and welded connections to other steel components and inserts.
Abstract
ISO 17660-1:2006 (adopted as UNE-EN ISO 17660-1:2008) applies to workshop and on-site welding of reinforcing steel for load-bearing welded joints. It sets requirements for selection of materials, design of welded joints, welding procedures and execution, welder qualification, quality requirements, inspection and testing. Non-load-bearing joints are covered by ISO 17660-2; factory production using multiple spot or projection welding machines is excluded. The requirements are intended for statically loaded structures (recommendations for fatigue-loaded structures are given where relevant).

- Number of pages: Varies by publisher/print format — ISO bibliographic entry lists 37 pages for the ISO edition; national publications commonly show ~45–50 pages depending on front/back matter.
Scope
This part of ISO 17660 is applicable to welding of weldable reinforcing steel and stainless reinforcing steel for load-bearing joints in reinforced concrete structures, whether performed in workshops or on-site. It covers welded joints between reinforcing bars and also joints between bars and other steel components such as connection devices and insert anchors (including prefabricated assemblies). It does not apply to mass factory production of welded fabrics or lattice girders using multiple spot or projection welding machines, and its requirements are aimed at structures subject to static loads (fatigue considerations are noted separately).
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and classification of load‑bearing welded joints for reinforcing steel.
- Requirements for base materials (weldability) and selection of compatible filler/welding consumables.
- Design rules for welded joints (joint geometry, clearances, preparation).
- Welding procedures and execution: recommended processes, pre‑heat/interpass control where applicable, sequence and techniques for on‑site and workshop welding.
- Qualification and approval of welding personnel (welder tests and acceptance criteria).
- Quality assurance, inspection and non‑destructive / destructive testing requirements and acceptance criteria for load‑bearing joints.
- Specific provisions for welded connections to other steel components (inserts, anchors, prefabricated assemblies).
- Exclusions and limitations (e.g., factory spot/projection welding of meshes; primary focus on static loading; guidance for fatigue where relevant).
Typical use and users
Used by structural and welding engineers, fabricators and erectors of reinforced concrete elements, construction contractors, quality managers, welding coordinators, inspection bodies and certification agencies. The standard is referenced when specifying welding requirements for reinforced concrete structures, preparing welding procedure specifications (WPS), qualifying welders, and carrying out acceptance testing and inspection of welded reinforcement connections.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: UNE-EN ISO 17660-1:2008 is the Spanish national adoption (UNE) of ISO 17660-1:2006, titled "Welding — Welding of reinforcing steel — Part 1: Load-bearing welded joints"; it specifies technical and quality requirements for load-bearing welded reinforcement connections.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers welding of weldable reinforcing steel (including stainless) for load-bearing joints in workshop or on-site conditions: materials, joint design, welding execution, welder qualification, inspection, testing and acceptance criteria. It excludes non-load-bearing joints (covered by ISO 17660-2) and high-volume factory spot/projection welded mesh production.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Structural and welding engineers, fabricators, construction contractors, welding coordinators, quality/inspection personnel and certification bodies use this standard when specifying, executing and accepting welded reinforcement joints in reinforced concrete works.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The UNE-EN ISO 17660-1:2008 edition is the national adoption of ISO 17660-1:2006 and is listed as in force by national catalogs; for the absolute latest status (confirmation of current/superseded/revision) consult the national standards body (AENOR for UNE) or ISO catalogues because standards may be periodically reviewed or revised.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 17660 is a multi-part series. Part 1 covers load-bearing welded joints; Part 2 covers non-load-bearing welded joints. The series is intended to be used together where appropriate.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Welding, reinforcing steel, load-bearing joints, welded connections, welder qualification, inspection, quality assurance, reinforced concrete, ISO 17660.
