Full title and description
STB UNE-EN ISO 7027-2:2020 — Water quality — Determination of turbidity — Part 2: Semi-quantitative methods for the assessment of transparency of waters. This is the European (UNE-EN) adoption of ISO 7027-2 (edition 1), published for use in Spain and distributed by the national body AENOR.
Abstract
This part of ISO 7027 specifies semi-quantitative methods to assess water transparency, including measurement of visual range with the transparency testing tube, measurement with a transparency testing disc for upper water layers and surface monitoring, and visibility assessment by divers at depth. It complements the quantitative turbidity methods given in ISO 7027-1 (optical turbidimeters/nephelometers).
General information
- Status: Published (active national adoption of ISO 7027-2:2019).
- Publication date: 28 October 2020 (UNE-EN adoption date).
- Publisher: AENOR (Asociación Española de Normalización y Certificación) — published as UNE-EN ISO 7027-2:2020.
- ICS / categories: Water quality; examination of physical properties of water — ICS 13.060.60 (and related 13.060.x classes as applicable).
- Edition / version: Edition 1 (ISO 7027-2:2019) — adopted as UNE-EN ISO 7027-2:2020.
- Number of pages: Approximately 20–21 pages (national edition packaging varies slightly by publisher).
Scope
Specifies semi-quantitative procedures for assessing the transparency of natural, surface, bathing and waste waters using simple visual-range methods (transparency tube, transparency disc) and diver visibility checks. It is intended for field and routine observational assessments where quick, low-cost estimates of transparency are required and where quantitative nephelometric turbidity measurement (ISO 7027‑1) is not needed or available.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and field conditions for semi-quantitative transparency assessment.
- Procedure and apparatus for the transparency testing tube method (visual range measurement in transparent/slightly cloudy waters).
- Procedure and apparatus for the transparency testing disc method for upper-layer/surface water visibility.
- Guidance on diver visibility assessments at specified depths.
- Relation and complementarity with ISO 7027-1 (quantitative turbidity measurement by nephelometer/nephelometric methods).
- Reporting format and interpretation guidance for semi-quantitative transparency results.
Typical use and users
Used by environmental agencies, field monitoring teams, water quality technicians, marine and freshwater researchers, bathingsite managers and consultants who need rapid, low-cost estimates of water transparency. Common applications include routine monitoring of lakes, rivers, coastal waters, recreational bathing areas and preliminary surveys where nephelometric instruments are not available.
Related standards
ISO 7027-1 (quantitative turbidity measurement using optical turbidimeters/nephelometers) — companion standard for laboratory and instrument-based turbidity determinations. Related national and regional EN adoptions of ISO 7027-2 exist (e.g., other EN/UNE/BS/STN versions). Additional standards for water sampling, monitoring and reporting may be relevant depending on local regulatory frameworks.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: It is the UNE-EN adoption of ISO 7027‑2 (edition 1), titled "Water quality — Determination of turbidity — Part 2: Semi-quantitative methods for the assessment of transparency of waters", published nationally in Spain as UNE-EN ISO 7027-2:2020.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers simple, semi-quantitative field methods for assessing water transparency (transparency tube, transparency disc and diver visibility checks) and provides guidance on carrying out and reporting those observations. It does not replace quantitative nephelometric turbidity methods (see ISO 7027‑1).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Environmental monitoring staff, field technicians, researchers, consultants and resource managers who require rapid, low-cost transparency assessments in fresh, coastal or bathing waters.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The ISO parent document is ISO 7027-2:2019 (edition 1). The UNE-EN adoption was published 28 October 2020; users should check national catalogues for any later revisions or confirmations but as adopted this document reflects the 2019 ISO edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 7027 series. Part 1 covers quantitative turbidity measurement (optical/nephelometric methods); Part 2 deals with semi-quantitative visual transparency methods.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Turbidity, transparency, water quality, semi-quantitative methods, transparency tube, transparency disc, ISO 7027-2, field monitoring.
