Full title and description
ISO 1014:2021 — Coke — Determination of true relative density, apparent relative density and porosity. This international standard specifies laboratory methods for determining the true relative density (using a displacement liquid), the apparent relative density (mass of a dry volume of coke relative to an equal volume of water) and the porosity of coke samples (crushed to less than 212 µm).
Abstract
Specifies procedures and calculation methods for measuring: (a) true relative density of coke (sample crushed to <212 µm) in relation to water (note: true relative density depends on the displacement liquid used); (b) apparent relative density of coke (ratio of mass of a dry volume of coke to the mass of an equal volume of water); and (c) porosity calculated from the above densities. The methods are intended for routine quality control and laboratory characterisation of metallurgical coke.
General information
- Status: Withdrawn / superseded (withdrawn and later reorganised into a multipart standard).
- Publication date: November 2021 (ISO publication: 2021-11).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 75.160.10 (Coke and related products / Coke testing).
- Edition / version: Edition 3 (2021).
- Number of pages: 10 pages (ISO published document).
Scope
Applies to laboratory determination of densities and porosity of metallurgical coke. Methods cover sample preparation (crushing to specified particle size), selection/use of displacement liquid for true density determinations, measurement procedures for apparent density, calculation formulas and expression of results. The standard is intended for use where consistent, comparable density and porosity data are required for quality control, specification and research.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition and distinction between true relative density and apparent relative density.
- Sample preparation requirement: coke crushed to particle size below 212 µm.
- Use of a displacement liquid and note that true relative density varies with the liquid chosen.
- Step-by-step laboratory procedure for measuring masses and volumes needed to compute densities.
- Formulae for calculating porosity from measured densities.
- Reporting requirements and expression of results (units, significant figures, test conditions).
Typical use and users
Used by metallurgical and coke producers, laboratory technicians, quality-control engineers, material testing laboratories, steelmakers and researchers working with coke and blast-furnace feed materials. Also referenced by standards developers and procurement/specification authors in the steel and coal/coke supply chains.
Related standards
ISO 1014:2021 was later reorganised into a multipart standard (parts published in 2025): ISO 1014-1:2025 (Determination of apparent relative density), ISO 1014-2:2025 (Determination of true relative density) and ISO 1014-3:2025 (Determination of porosity). It also replaces earlier editions (ISO 1014:1975 and ISO 1014:1985 and their corrigenda) and is maintained under ISO/TC 27/SC 3 (Coke and coal testing).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 1014:2021 is an international standard that specified laboratory methods to determine true relative density, apparent relative density and porosity of coke (with sample crushing to less than 212 µm).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers sample preparation, selection/use of displacement liquid for true density, measurement steps for apparent density, calculation methods for porosity and the reporting of results. The procedures are intended for routine laboratory testing and quality control.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Metallurgical coke producers, steelmakers, independent testing laboratories, researchers and quality-control personnel in the coal and metallurgical industries.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 1014:2021 was published in November 2021 but has been withdrawn/reorganised and superseded by a multipart standard published in 2025: ISO 1014-1:2025, ISO 1014-2:2025 and ISO 1014-3:2025. For current testing practice, users should consult those 2025 parts (published July 2025).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — the 2021 single-document arrangement was reorganised into a multipart standard (Parts 1–3) published in 2025, each part addressing a specific measurement (apparent density, true density, porosity).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Coke, true relative density, apparent relative density, porosity, displacement liquid, sample preparation, ISO 1014.
