Full title and description
Protective equipment for use in ice hockey — Part 4: Head and face protectors for goalkeepers. This International Standard specifies performance requirements and test methods for head and face protectors intended specifically for ice hockey goalkeepers, including requirements for materials, protective coverage, impact and penetration resistance, retention and optical/vision characteristics.
Abstract
ISO 10256-4:2024 sets out the normative performance criteria and corresponding test methods that head and face protectors for ice hockey goalkeepers must meet to reduce the risk of injury while allowing the equipment to remain suitable for play. It is intended to be used together with the other parts of the ISO 10256 series that address protective equipment for ice hockey.

Scope
This part of ISO 10256 specifies performance requirements and test methods for head and face protectors designed for use by ice hockey goalkeepers only. Where relevant, it addresses materials and construction, design and coverage, penetration resistance, shock absorption, puck-impact resistance, retention system properties, field of vision/optical quality, markings and user information. It is intended to be read in conjunction with ISO 10256-1, ISO 10256-2 and ISO 10256-3.
Key topics and requirements
- Materials, assembly and construction quality requirements for goalkeeper head/face protectors.
- Defined protected areas (coverage) for head and face and minimum coverage criteria.
- Penetration resistance tests (blade/disk or equivalent) to assess protection against sharp impacts.
- Shock-absorption and energy attenuation tests to evaluate reduction of transmitted forces.
- Puck-impact resistance tests to ensure durability and protection under typical game impacts.
- Retention system performance and retention-strength tests to verify secure fit during play.
- Requirements for field of vision and optical quality so as not to impair a goalkeeper’s sight line.
- Marking, labelling and user information requirements and a required format for test reports.
Typical use and users
Primary users include helmet and protective-equipment manufacturers, conformity assessment and test laboratories, sports safety officers, certification bodies, national standards committees, and procurement/specification authors for hockey clubs and leagues. The standard is used to design, test, certify and procure goalkeeper head and face protectors that meet internationally harmonized safety and performance criteria.
Related standards
ISO 10256 is a multipart series; ISO 10256-1, ISO 10256-2 and ISO 10256-3 provide complementary requirements for other types of ice-hockey protective equipment. EN/EN ISO adoptions of ISO 10256-4:2024 have been prepared in some regions (EN ISO / national identical adoptions) to align PPE regulatory conformity routes in Europe.
