Full title and description
ISO 10270:2022 — Corrosion of metals and alloys — Aqueous corrosion testing of zirconium alloys for use in nuclear power reactors. This International Standard specifies methods and inspection criteria used when testing zirconium and zirconium-alloy products in high-temperature water and steam environments representative of reactor service conditions.
Abstract
This document specifies procedures for (a) determination of mass gain, (b) surface inspection of corrosion products formed on zirconium and its alloys when tested in water at about 360 °C or in steam at or above 400 °C, and (c) performance of tests in steam at 10.3 MPa. It is applicable to wrought products, castings, powder metallurgy products and weld metals and is intended both for alloy development and for product acceptance testing.

Scope
ISO 10270:2022 covers laboratory test methods and inspection criteria for evaluating aqueous corrosion behaviour of zirconium alloys intended for use in nuclear power reactors. The standard addresses test environments and parameters representative of reactor conditions (high-temperature water and steam), measurement of mass change, and visual/surface inspection of corrosion products; it applies to base materials and welds across wrought, cast and powder metallurgy products.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of test environments: water at ≈360 °C and steam at ≥400 °C, including specified steam pressure conditions (tests in steam at 10.3 MPa).
- Procedure for measuring mass gain (weight change) as a quantitative corrosion metric.
- Surface inspection and acceptance criteria for corrosion products (visual and, where specified, microscopic assessment).
- Applicability to wrought products, castings, powder metallurgy materials and weld metals used in reactor components.
- Use of the method for alloy development, heat-treatment evaluation and assessment of welding techniques as well as for product acceptance testing.
These topics and requirements are summarized from the ISO standard text and the published EN adoption.
Typical use and users
Primary users are materials and corrosion engineers, metallurgists, testing laboratories, nuclear component manufacturers, reactor operators and regulatory bodies involved in qualification and acceptance of zirconium-alloy components (fuel cladding, structural parts). The standard is used during alloy development, quality control, welding qualification and failure investigation related to aqueous corrosion in reactor environments.
Related standards
ISO 10270:2022 is published by ISO/TC 156 (Corrosion of metals and alloys). It updates earlier national and international versions (previous ISO 10270:1995 and related EN ISO adoptions). Users often consult other reactor-materials and corrosion testing standards from the same committee when designing a full test program.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10270:2022 is an International Standard that specifies aqueous corrosion test methods and surface inspection criteria for zirconium alloys used in nuclear power reactors.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers procedures for measuring mass gain, inspecting corrosion products, and performing high-temperature water and steam tests (including steam at 10.3 MPa) applicable to wrought, cast, powder‑metallurgy products and welds.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Materials and corrosion engineers, metallurgical test labs, nuclear component manufacturers, reactor operators and regulators use the standard for alloy development, acceptance testing and qualification of welding/heat‑treatment practices.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10270:2022 is the current (second) edition published in 2022 and supersedes earlier editions. National and regional adoptions (EN ISO) reflect the same 2022 text.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: The standard is maintained by ISO/TC 156 (Corrosion of metals and alloys) and is related to other corrosion and materials testing standards produced by that technical committee; it is not literally a multi-part ISO series but sits within the broader family of corrosion-testing standards.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Key keywords include: zirconium alloys, aqueous corrosion, steam testing, mass gain, reactor materials, corrosion testing, surface inspection, ISO 10270.
