Full title and description

St ISO 14555-2017 — Welding — Arc stud welding of metallic materials. This International Standard specifies requirements for arc stud welding of metallic materials subject to static and fatigue loading, including welding knowledge, quality requirements, welding procedure specification and qualification, operator qualification, and testing of production welds. It has been prepared for use as a contractual reference for demonstrating a manufacturer's capability to produce stud-welded construction of a specified quality.

Abstract

ISO 14555:2017 covers arc stud welding processes and defines requirements particular to stud welding: production equipment and control, welding procedure specification (WPS), welding procedure qualification (WPQ), operator qualification and testing and inspection criteria for both static and fatigue-loaded applications. Annexes provide guidance on processing (Annex A) and on adopting requirements selectively where not all clauses are applicable (Annex B). The standard references general fusion-welding quality requirements in the ISO 3834 series and operator qualification in ISO 14732.

General information

  • Status: Withdrawn (superseded).
  • Publication date: May 2017 (Edition 4).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 25.160.10 (Welding processes).
  • Edition / version: Edition 4 (2017).
  • Number of pages: 65 pages (ISO published count).

Scope

Applies to arc stud welding of metallic materials where welded studs and their attachments are subject to static and/or fatigue loading. The standard specifies requirements for demonstrating process control and product quality: selection and qualification of welding procedures and operators, production controls, inspection and mechanical testing criteria, and documentation needed to show compliance. It is intended for use where contractual or regulatory demonstrable capability is required.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions and terminology specific to arc stud welding (modes of stud welding, stud types, processing terms).
  • Requirements for welding knowledge, personnel competence and operator qualification (references ISO 14732).
  • Welding procedure specification (WPS) and welding procedure qualification (WPQ) for stud welding.
  • Production equipment, power sources, fixturing, cables, earth connections and weld-data monitoring.
  • Acceptance criteria and mechanical testing for static and fatigue performance of stud welds.
  • Inspection, nondestructive testing where applicable, and production-test regimes.
  • Documentation, traceability and quality system cross-reference to ISO 3834 series (general fusion-welding quality requirements).
  • Annex guidance on processing ranges and selective application of clauses (Annex A and Annex B).

Typical use and users

Used by manufacturers and fabricators who perform or specify arc stud welding for structural, building, marine, transportation and industrial applications. Typical users include welding coordinators, quality managers, production engineers, welding procedure writers, weld inspectors, testing laboratories, certification bodies and clients specifying contract welding quality for static and fatigue-loaded stud-welded assemblies.

Related standards

Commonly used together with the ISO 3834 series (quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials) and ISO 14732 (qualification of welding operators). Regional adoptions (EN/SS/ČSN variants) and later revisions (e.g., ISO 14555:2025) supersede or complement the 2017 edition. Other welding and testing standards referenced for inspection and mechanical test methods may also apply depending on contract requirements.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 14555:2017 is an International Standard that sets requirements for arc stud welding of metallic materials, covering procedure and operator qualification, production controls, inspection and testing for studs subject to static and fatigue loads.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers process-specific requirements for arc stud welding including equipment and power supplies, welding procedure specification and qualification, operator qualification, production testing and acceptance criteria, and documentation needed to demonstrate capability and quality.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers, fabricators, welding coordinators, quality managers, weld inspectors, testing laboratories and clients who specify or perform arc stud welding where demonstrable static or fatigue performance is required.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 14555:2017 has been withdrawn and is superseded by a later edition (ISO 14555:2025). The 2017 edition remains a historical/reference document but for current normative use the 2025 edition should be consulted.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the family of welding standards produced by ISO/TC 44 and is intended to be used alongside the ISO 3834 series (general fusion-welding quality requirements) and related personnel and testing standards such as ISO 14732.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: arc stud welding; stud welding; WPS; WPQ; operator qualification; fatigue testing; static loading; welding inspection; ISO 14555.
