Full title and description
ISO 14900:2023 — Plastics — Polyols for use in the production of polyurethanes — Determination of hydroxyl number. This International Standard specifies laboratory methods for measuring the hydroxyl number (hydroxyl value) of polyols used as raw materials for polyurethane production, including test procedures, sample preparation, reagents, calculations and reporting conventions.
Abstract
This document specifies two analytical methods for the determination of the hydroxyl number of polyols used in polyurethane manufacture. Method A is primarily intended for readily esterified polyether polyols and for polyols with significant steric hindrance (for example sugar-based polyols). Method B is intended for polyether polyols, polymer polyols and amine-initiated polyols but can underestimate values for sterically hindered polyols. The methods are intended for research, quality control and specification purposes; applicability to other polyols requires verification and appropriate precautions.

Scope
ISO 14900:2023 defines two procedures for measuring hydroxyl number in polyols intended for polyurethane production. It covers selection and preparation of samples, required reagents, titration or instrumental steps, calculation of hydroxyl number and expression of results. The standard indicates which method is preferable for different polyol types (e.g., polyether polyols, polymer polyols, amine-initiated polyols and sterically hindered polyols) and provides guidance on limitations and verification of applicability for other polyol chemistries.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition and significance of hydroxyl number for polyols used in polyurethane formulations.
- Two standardized test methods (Method A and Method B) with guidance on applicability and limitations.
- Detailed sample preparation, reagent specification and procedural steps for accurate titration/measurement.
- Calculations and expression of results (hydroxyl number units and reporting conventions).
- Precision, repeatability considerations and notes on steric hindrance effects and interfering substances.
- Instructions for ensuring method validity when applied to atypical or novel polyol chemistries.
Typical use and users
ISO 14900:2023 is used by chemical manufacturers, analytical and quality-control laboratories, raw material suppliers, polyurethane formulators, research institutions and regulatory bodies. It supports routine quality control, specification of incoming polyol batches, R&D activities for new polyol chemistries and verification of supplier declarations.
Related standards
ISO 14900:2023 replaces the earlier ISO 14900:2017 edition. National adoptions (for example BS ISO 14900:2023) and regional implementations exist. Related documents include other ISO standards and test methods on polyols and polyurethane raw materials maintained by ISO/TC 61/SC 12, and comparable national or industry methods for hydroxyl value determination used in parallel (where applicable).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 14900:2023 is an International Standard that specifies laboratory methods for determining the hydroxyl number of polyols used in the production of polyurethanes.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers two specific test methods for measuring hydroxyl number (Method A and Method B), including sample preparation, reagents, procedural steps, calculations, applicability guidance and limitations for different polyol types.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Chemical manufacturers, quality-control and analytical laboratories, polyurethane formulators, raw material suppliers, research organizations and regulatory bodies involved in specification and testing of polyols.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: It is current. ISO 14900:2023 was published in December 2023 and supersedes the previous ISO 14900:2017 edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: The standard is maintained within the suite of ISO standards related to plastics and polyurethane raw materials under ISO/TC 61 (in particular SC 12). It is the third edition of ISO 14900 and is associated with national/adopted versions (for example BS ISO 14900:2023).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Hydroxyl number, hydroxyl value, polyols, polyether polyols, polymer polyols, polyurethane, analytical test method, quality control.
