Full title and description
Welding — Calibration, verification and validation of equipment used for welding, including ancillary activities. This International Standard specifies requirements and guidance for calibration, verification and validation of equipment used to control process variables during fabrication and to control properties of equipment for welding and allied processes where the resulting output cannot be readily or economically documented by subsequent monitoring, inspection or testing.
Abstract
ISO 17662:2016 defines requirements for ensuring equipment used in welding and allied processes is calibrated, verified and validated so that process variables affecting fitness-for-purpose and safety are controlled. It includes guidance for acceptance testing (Annex B) and on the involvement of third parties (Annex C), and clarifies that requirements for final-product inspection, manufacture or installation of new equipment are outside its scope.
General information
- Status: Withdrawn (revised and replaced by ISO 17662:2025).
- Publication date: Published March 2016 (Edition 2 — 3 March 2016 commonly cited for national adoptions).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 25.160.30 (Welding equipment).
- Edition / version: Edition 2 (2016).
- Number of pages: 29 pages (as published by ISO).
Scope
Applies to calibration, verification and validation of equipment used in production or on site for welding and allied processes where process outputs cannot be fully documented later by inspection or testing. It covers process variables that influence fitness-for-purpose and safety, and is limited to activities after installation (maintenance/operation). It does not cover calibration/verification performed solely for final-product inspection, nor the manufacture or initial installation of equipment. Guidance for acceptance testing and for third-party involvement is provided in annexes.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and roles — responsibilities of manufacturers, users, maintenance and calibration bodies.
- Requirements for calibration, verification and validation processes (principles, methods, acceptance criteria and traceability of measurements).
- Frequency and intervals for verification and recalibration based on risk, equipment type and usage.
- Documentation, record keeping and reporting requirements for calibrations, verifications and validation activities.
- Guidance for acceptance testing of equipment (Annex B) and for activities involving external parties (Annex C).
Typical use and users
Used by welding engineers, quality assurance / quality control personnel, workshop and site maintenance teams, calibration laboratories, equipment purchasers and safety managers to establish and verify measurement and control of welding process equipment. It is referenced by organizations that prepare welding procedure specifications and that need documented traceability and validation of welding equipment performance.
Related standards
Closely related to the ISO 15609 series (specification of welding procedures) and other welding quality and personnel standards (for example ISO 3834 and ISO 9606 series) where process-variable control and validation are required. ISO 17662:2016 revises ISO 17662:2005 and has itself been revised by ISO 17662:2025 (published September 2025).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 17662:2016 is an International Standard that specified requirements for the calibration, verification and validation of welding and allied-process equipment used in production and on site.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers processes and requirements to ensure equipment controlling welding process variables performs as required (definitions, procedures, intervals, traceability, documentation), and gives guidance for acceptance testing and involvement of other parties. It excludes calibration actions solely tied to final-product inspection and the manufacture/installation of new equipment.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Welding engineers, QA/QC staff, maintenance and site teams, calibration laboratories, equipment vendors and organizations that write or apply welding procedure specifications.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 17662:2016 has been withdrawn and superseded by ISO 17662:2025 (Edition 3, published September 2025). For new projects and compliance references, use the 2025 edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is aligned with and referenced by other welding standards, notably the ISO 15609 series (welding procedure specifications) and standards addressing welding quality and personnel competence; it updates the earlier ISO 17662:2005 edition.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Calibration, verification, validation, welding equipment, process variables, traceability, acceptance testing, QA/QC, ISO 17662.
