Full title and description
Founding — Ausferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons — Classification. This International Standard defines grades and the corresponding requirements for ausferritic spheroidal (nodular) graphite cast irons, giving classification criteria based on mechanical properties and hardness for use in foundry product specification and quality control.
Abstract
This document specifies five grades of ausferritic spheroidal graphite cast iron classified by mechanical properties determined on machined test pieces prepared from separately cast samples, side-by-side cast or cast-on samples, or from samples cut from a casting. It also specifies two grades defined by hardness. The standard provides the basis for classification, sampling and test-piece preparation used to verify conformance to the grades.
General information
- Status: Published (International Standard, confirmed).
- Publication date: June 2020.
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 77.080.10 (Irons).
- Edition / version: Edition 2 (2020).
- Number of pages: 34.
Scope
Specifies classification of ausferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons into grades by (a) mechanical-property criteria measured on machined test pieces prepared from separately cast or cast-on samples or samples cut from castings, and (b) hardness ranges for two hardness-based grades. The standard applies to the definition of grades and corresponding verification requirements for these specific cast-iron types.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of five mechanical-property based grades for ausferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons.
- Definition of two hardness-based grades and specified hardness ranges.
- Requirements and procedures for preparing machined test pieces (separately cast, side-by-side/cast-on, and samples cut from castings).
- Minimum mechanical-property limits and classification tables for grade selection and acceptance.
- Guidance for applying the classification in specification and quality control of foundry products.
Typical use and users
Used by foundry engineers, metallurgists, materials and quality-control personnel, product designers specifying ausferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons, purchasing/procurement teams, and standards committees. Typical applications include internal quality specifications, supplier/product acceptance testing, and communication of material grades between purchasers and suppliers.
Related standards
ISO 17804:2020 replaces ISO 17804:2005 (superseded). Related cast-iron classification standards include ISO 1083 (spheroidal graphite cast irons — classification) and other ISO/TC 25 publications covering casting materials and testing methods; these documents are commonly used together when specifying and testing spheroidal graphite and related cast irons.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 17804:2020 is an International Standard that defines the classification (grades) and associated requirements for ausferritic spheroidal graphite (nodular) cast irons, including mechanical-property and hardness-based grade definitions.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers classification criteria, grades (five by mechanical properties, two by hardness), and the types of test-piece preparation and sampling used to determine conformance to those grades.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Foundry and materials engineers, metallurgists, QA/QC teams, product designers, and procurement/specification writers who need standardized grade definitions and testing/acceptance criteria for ausferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 17804:2020 is the current edition (Edition 2, published June 2020) and supersedes ISO 17804:2005.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is part of the family of ISO standards on cast irons and foundry materials maintained by ISO/TC 25; related classification standards (for example ISO 1083 for spheroidal graphite cast irons) are commonly used alongside ISO 17804 for broader material specification needs.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Ausferritic, spheroidal graphite, nodular graphite, cast iron, classification, grades, mechanical properties, hardness, foundry, ISO.
