Full title and description

Mining and earth-moving machinery — Rock drill rigs and rock reinforcement rigs — Part 2: Safety requirements. This part of ISO 18758 specifies safety requirements intended to minimise hazards associated with rock drill rigs and rock reinforcement rigs used in underground and surface operations.

Abstract

This document sets out the safety requirements for rock drill rigs and rock reinforcement rigs for operations such as blast-hole drilling, rock reinforcement, secondary breaking, dimensional stone drilling, mineral prospecting (core or reverse circulation), water and methane drainage drilling and raise boring. It is applicable to earth‑moving machinery modified to become rock drill or rock reinforcement rigs and addresses significant hazards, hazardous situations and events when the equipment is used as intended or under reasonably foreseeable misuse; it excludes specific rig types listed in the standard and does not apply to rigs manufactured before publication.

General information

  • Status: Published (under review / revision noted by ISO)
  • Publication date: 2018-06 (published May/June 2018)
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
  • ICS / categories: 53.100; 73.100.30 (earth‑moving machinery; drilling and mine excavation)
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (2018)
  • Number of pages: 57

Core bibliographic and life‑cycle information above is taken from ISO's published record for ISO 18758‑2:2018.

Scope

The scope covers safety requirements for rock drill rigs and rock reinforcement rigs used for the principal underground and surface drilling operations listed in the abstract (blast-hole drilling; rock reinforcement; secondary breaking; dimensional stone drilling; mineral prospecting; drainage drilling; raise boring). It applies to rigs that are modifications of earth‑moving machinery (ISO 6165) and explicitly excludes a range of different specialized rig types (for example certain geothermal, water‑well, sonic, kelly, cable‑tool, derrick‑mounted and other specially defined rigs). The standard addresses hazards relevant during normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse but does not apply retroactively to machines manufactured before its publication.

Key topics and requirements

  • Hazard identification and risk assessment for drilling and reinforcement operations.
  • Protective devices and guarding for moving parts and drilling tools.
  • Controls, emergency‑stop arrangements and operator interface requirements.
  • Structural integrity, stability and rollover/overturn protection where applicable.
  • Hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical safety provisions specific to rig systems.
  • Access, maintenance, inspection points and safe maintenance procedures.
  • Requirements for hoisting, lifting and anchoring systems used with rigs.
  • Noise, vibration and ergonomics considerations for operator safety.
  • Marking, documentation and operator information (see also ISO 18758‑1 vocabulary).

Typical use and users

Primary users are original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of rock drill and reinforcement rigs, machine designers, safety and compliance engineers, testing and certification bodies, procurement specialists in mining and construction, maintenance teams, and training organisations that prepare operator/maintenance instructions and safety manuals.

Related standards

Key related documents include ISO 18758‑1:2018 (Vocabulary) which defines terms used in Part 2, ISO 6165 (definitions for earth‑moving machinery) and other industry safety standards. ISO has been progressing a consolidated revision under ISO/FDIS 18758 (final draft stage) which will affect Part 2 content and national/regional adoptions (draft EN/DIN/EN ISO versions have been prepared).

Keywords

rock drill rigs; rock reinforcement rigs; drilling safety; earth‑moving machinery; machine guarding; operator safety; ISO 18758; mining equipment safety; drilling hazards; risk assessment.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 18758‑2:2018 is Part 2 of the ISO 18758 series and specifies safety requirements for rock drill rigs and rock reinforcement rigs used in mining and earth‑moving applications.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers safety design, guarding, controls, stability, hydraulic/electrical safety, maintenance access, operator information and related risk‑control measures for the listed drilling and reinforcement operations, and states types of rigs and situations to which it does not apply.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers, designers, safety engineers, testing/certification bodies, procurement and maintenance teams in mining, quarrying and construction, plus training organisations and regulatory authorities.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 18758‑2 was published in 2018 and remains the published Part 2 edition, but ISO records indicate the series is under review and a consolidated revision (ISO/FDIS 18758) has been advanced for approval; national adoptions and draft EN versions have also been prepared, so users should monitor the ISO record and national bodies for a formal replacement.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 18758 series; Part 1 (ISO 18758‑1:2018) covers vocabulary and is referenced throughout Part 2.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Rock drill rigs, rock reinforcement rigs, drilling safety, earth‑moving machinery, machine guarding, operator safety, risk assessment, ISO 18758.
