Full title and description
Automatic identification and data capture techniques — Bar code print quality test specification — Linear symbols. This international standard specifies methods for measuring and grading the print quality of one‑dimensional (linear) bar code symbols and provides guidance on causes of poor quality and corrective actions.
Abstract
This document specifies the methodology for the measurement of specific attributes of bar code symbols, defines a method for evaluating those measurements to derive an overall symbol quality assessment (grade), and gives information on possible causes of deviation from optimum grades to assist users in taking corrective action. The methodology applies to symbologies for which a reference decode algorithm exists and is intended for linear scanning methods, but may be applied partially or wholly to other symbologies.

Scope
The standard specifies measurement procedures and evaluation criteria for assessing the print quality of linear bar code symbols. It applies to symbologies with a defined reference decode algorithm intended for linear scanning, and its methods can be adapted to other symbologies as appropriate. The standard also documents common causes of quality degradation and suggests corrective measures for producers, printers and users.
Key topics and requirements
- Defined measurement methodology for symbol attributes (contrast, edge contrast, modulation, defects, decodability and related parameters).
- Procedure for converting measured attribute values into grades and an overall symbol quality assessment.
- Reference decode algorithm requirement for the symbology under test.
- Test conditions, instrumentation and measurement geometry guidance to ensure repeatability and comparability.
- Reporting format and minimum information required in test reports.
- Guidance on common causes of poor grades and recommended corrective actions (printing, substrate, ink, scanner alignment, environmental factors).
Typical use and users
The standard is used by barcode equipment and verifier manufacturers, label and packaging printers, quality assurance and inspection laboratories, retailers, logistics and supply‑chain operators, healthcare providers implementing barcoding, and standards/conformity assessment bodies. It is applied for internal QA, supplier acceptance testing, regulatory/compliance checks and verification of printing processes.
Related standards
Closely related documents include ISO/IEC 15415 (print quality test specification for two‑dimensional symbols) and standards addressing direct part marking and other symbol types (for example ISO/IEC 29158). The 2025 edition replaces the previous ISO/IEC 15416:2016 edition.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO/IEC 15416:2025 is an international standard that defines the test specification and grading methodology for the print quality of linear (one‑dimensional) bar code symbols.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers measurement methods for specific symbol attributes, how to evaluate and convert those measurements into grades and an overall assessment, recommended test conditions and equipment, and guidance on causes of poor quality with corrective actions.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Barcode hardware and verifier manufacturers, label and packaging printers, QA laboratories, retailers and logistics operators, healthcare organizations using barcodes, and conformity assessment bodies use this standard for quality control and acceptance testing.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: Current — the Edition 3 version ISO/IEC 15416:2025 was published in January 2025 and supersedes the previous 2016 edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is part of the suite of AIDC (automatic identification and data capture) quality and test specifications. Related parts include ISO/IEC 15415 (2D symbol quality) and ISO/IEC 29158 (DPM quality), among other AIDC documents.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Key keywords include barcode, bar code, linear symbols, print quality, verifier, grade, AIDC, decodability, modulation, edge contrast and defects.
