Full title and description
Systems and software engineering — Systems and software Quality Requirements and Evaluation (SQuaRE) — Quality model overview and usage. This International Standard defines a framework and terminology for defining and using quality models composed of quality characteristics and sub‑characteristics, and provides guidance for their structure, semantics and relationship to measurement, requirements and evaluation.
Abstract
This document establishes a framework for defining quality models: it explains the concept of a quality model, describes the structure and semantics of quality models, details the relationships between quality models and measurement, requirement definition and evaluation, and gives guidelines, requirements and examples for using quality models. The aim is to support consistent specification, measurement and evaluation of system and software quality across SQuaRE parts.

Scope
ISO/IEC 25002:2024 establishes a framework for defining quality models used within the SQuaRE series. It specifies the concept and structure of quality models (characteristics and sub‑characteristics), the semantics needed to ensure consistent interpretation, and how quality models relate to measurement activities, requirement specification and evaluation processes. It also provides guidelines, requirements and examples to support practical use of quality models in specifying, measuring and evaluating the quality of systems and software.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition and concept of a quality model (characteristics and sub‑characteristics).
- Structure and formal semantics for quality models to enable consistent interpretation and mapping to measures.
- Relationship of quality models to measurement, requirement definition and evaluation processes.
- Guidelines and practical examples for constructing, tailoring and applying quality models.
- Requirements for documenting and using quality models within the SQuaRE framework.
Typical use and users
This standard is intended for systems and software engineers, quality managers, requirements engineers, evaluators and assessors, tool and method vendors, and organizations specifying or measuring software/system quality. Typical uses include: designing or tailoring product and system quality models; mapping quality characteristics to measurable attributes; specifying quality requirements; and supporting evaluation and procurement activities where consistent quality terminology and models are needed.
Related standards
ISO/IEC 25002:2024 is part of the ISO/IEC 25000 SQuaRE family (Systems and software Quality Requirements and Evaluation). It works together with other SQuaRE parts such as the general SQuaRE guide and the measurement/evaluation parts of the 25000 series. ISO/IEC 25002:2024 replaces and updates concepts from the earlier ISO/IEC 25010:2011 quality model, reflecting the reorganization of SQuaRE parts.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO/IEC 25002:2024 is an international standard that defines a framework and guidance for constructing and using quality models for systems and software as part of the SQuaRE family.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the concept, structure and semantics of quality models (characteristics and sub‑characteristics), how those models relate to measurement, requirements and evaluation, and provides guidelines, requirements and examples for practical use.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Engineers and architects, QA and test professionals, requirements engineers, evaluators and independent assessors, procurement and vendor assessment teams, and tool vendors who need consistent quality models and mappings to measurement and evaluation.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO/IEC 25002:2024 is current (published March 2024). It replaces the earlier quality‑model content previously published as ISO/IEC 25010:2011.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is part of the ISO/IEC 25000 SQuaRE series (Systems and software Quality Requirements and Evaluation) and is intended to be used alongside other 25000 series parts that address measurement, requirements, evaluation and related guidance.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: quality model; quality characteristic; sub‑characteristic; SQuaRE; measurement; quality requirements; evaluation; software quality; system quality; ISO/IEC 25002:2024.
