Full title and description
Information technology — International Standardized Profile FDI5 — Directory data definitions — VT Use of the Directory. This International Standardized Profile defines the directory schema and related directory-use conventions for the VT application capability to be stored and made available in an OSI-style directory service.
Abstract
This ISP specifies the application profile FDI5: directory data definitions that describe how VT (visual terminal / VT application capability) information is represented in the Directory. It covers the data model, object classes and attributes, DIT structure and conformance rules for Directory System Agents (DSAs) and Directory User Agents (DUAs), and includes normative annexes that provide schema examples and implementation notes.
General information
- Status: Withdrawn.
- Publication date: December 1998 (first edition).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO) / International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) — developed under ISO/IEC JTC 1.
- ICS / categories: 35.100.05 (Multilayer applications).
- Edition / version: Edition 1 (1998).
- Number of pages: 12 pages.
Scope
Specifies the schema and directory-use conventions for storing VT application capability information in an X.500-style Directory. The profile is part of the International Standardized Profiles framework (see ISO/IEC TR 10000 series) and defines DIT structure, object classes (including a VT capability object class), attribute sets, support levels, conformance criteria for DSAs and DUAs, and normative annex material for implementers. The profile is intended for use where directory-enabled discovery and capability description of VT services is required.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of the Directory Information Tree (DIT) structure for VT-related entries.
- Object classes and attribute definitions for VT capability and related directory entries (including schema examples in annexes).
- Conformance rules for Directory System Agents (DSA) and Directory User Agents (DUA) implementing the profile.
- Support levels, abbreviations and normative references necessary to interoperate with ISO/IEC 9594 (X.500) Directory services.
- Normative annexes providing examples, mapping guidance and implementation notes.
Typical use and users
Intended for implementers of directory services and directory-enabled applications, systems integrators, network architects and vendors who need a standardized schema and conformance rules to publish and discover VT application capabilities in an OSI/X.500 directory environment. It is also relevant to organizations maintaining enterprise directories where interoperability with other directory-aware systems is required.
Related standards
Related documents and series include the ISO/IEC TR 10000 family (framework and taxonomy for International Standardized Profiles), ISO/IEC 9594 (X.500 series — Directory), other ISP entries in the 1207x series (for example ISP 12071 and ISP 12073) and ISP 10616 (directory information common to multiple applications). These documents provide the overarching profile framework, directory protocol/architecture references and adjacent application profiles.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO/IEC ISP 12072:1998 is an International Standardized Profile that defines directory data definitions for the FDI5 profile (VT Use of the Directory), specifying how VT application capability information is represented and used in an OSI-style directory.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the directory schema (object classes and attributes), DIT structure, conformance rules for DSAs and DUAs, support levels, normative references and annexes with schema examples and implementation guidance for VT-related directory entries.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Directory service implementers, directory-enabled application developers, systems integrators, network architects and organizations that need standardized directory schema for publishing or discovering VT capabilities.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The standard has been withdrawn and is no longer active. National and regional catalogues record it as withdrawn (withdrawal actions recorded by ISO and several national bodies). Users should check current directory/profile guidance and later ISPs or other directory standards for contemporary replacements.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is part of the ISO/IEC International Standardized Profiles (ISP) family and specifically belongs to the set of Directory-related ISPs (FDI profiles). It references and is positioned within the TR 10000 taxonomy and is related to other ISP entries in the 1207x series.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Directory, X.500, DIT, object class, schema, VT, FDI5, ISP 12072, directory data definitions.
