Full title and description
ISO/TR 1281-2:2008 — Rolling bearings — Explanatory notes on ISO 281 — Part 2: Modified rating life calculation, based on a systems approach to fatigue stresses. This technical report provides background, derivations and explanatory material that support the modified rating-life expressions introduced in ISO 281:2007, in particular the system-based life modification factor and its use together with the reliability factor.
Abstract
ISO 281:2007 introduced a systems-based life modification factor aISO in addition to the reliability factor a1; these are used in the modified rating-life equation Lnm = a1 · aISO · L10. ISO/TR 1281-2:2008 gives supplementary background information and derivations for a1 and aISO, explains the systems approach to fatigue stresses and shows how these factors are applied in practical rating-life calculations. A technical corrigendum to this report was issued in 2009.

Scope
This technical report explains and expands the theoretical basis behind the modified rating-life formulations given in ISO 281:2007. It covers the derivation and interpretation of the reliability modification factor a1 and the systems-based factor aISO, describes the systems approach to assessing fatigue stresses affecting rolling-element bearings, and supplies worked examples and explanatory notes intended to assist designers and analysts in applying the modified rating-life equation Lnm = a1 · aISO · L10. The report does not replace ISO 281 but serves as supporting explanatory material.
Key topics and requirements
- Explanation and derivation of the modified rating-life relationship Lnm = a1 · aISO · L10.
- Definition, meaning and recommended evaluation methods for the reliability factor a1.
- Systems approach to fatigue stresses and the derivation/use of the systems-based modification factor aISO.
- Worked examples and guidance to support application of ISO 281 methods in practical designs and life assessments.
- Notes addressing corrections issued in the 2009 technical corrigendum.
Typical use and users
Used by bearing designers, mechanical and reliability engineers, tribologists, gearbox and rotating-equipment designers, maintenance planners and researchers who need a deeper theoretical understanding of bearing fatigue-life evaluation and the systems-based modifiers applied to ISO 281 life calculations. The report is supplementary to ISO 281 and is referenced when applying modified rating-life calculations in design, failure analysis and lifecycle assessment.
Related standards
Directly related to ISO 281:2007 (Rolling bearings — Dynamic load ratings and rating life), which introduces the modified rating-life expressions this TR explains. Part 1 of the same explanatory series is ISO/TR 1281-1 (original 2008 edition, subsequently revised and republished as ISO/TR 1281-1:2021). A corrigendum for ISO/TR 1281-2:2008 was published in 2009 (ISO/TR 1281-2:2008/Cor 1:2009).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO/TR 1281-2:2008 is a Technical Report providing explanatory notes and derivations that support the modified rating-life calculations described in ISO 281:2007, with a focus on the systems-based life modification factor.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the theoretical background, derivation and interpretation of the reliability factor a1 and the systems-based modification factor aISO, shows how these factors combine with the basic rating life L10 (Lnm = a1 · aISO · L10), and supplies explanatory examples and commentary to help apply ISO 281 methods.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Bearing designers, mechanical and reliability engineers, maintenance and asset managers, academics and researchers working on bearing life prediction and failure analysis.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO/TR 1281-2:2008 remains published in its 2008 edition; a technical corrigendum was issued in 2009. As of the present check (ISO catalogue entries and related standards), there is no later edition or full replacement of Part 2 listed on ISO (Part 1 was updated in 2021). Users should confirm current status via their national standards body or the ISO catalogue before assuming there have been further revisions.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO/TR 1281 explanatory notes series on ISO 281; Part 1 covers basic dynamic load rating and basic rating life (ISO/TR 1281-1), and both parts are intended as explanatory supplements to ISO 281:2007. Part 1 has been updated (new edition 2021).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: rolling bearings; rating life; modified rating life; L10; aISO; a1; systems approach; fatigue stresses; ISO 281.
