Full title and description
Cutting tool data representation and exchange — Part 2: Reference dictionary for the cutting items. This technical specification defines a reference dictionary of cutting items, their descriptive properties and value domains to support standardized representation and exchange of cutting-tool data.
Abstract
This document specifies a reference dictionary for cutting items including: definitions and identifications of classes of cutting items and their features with an associated classification scheme; definitions and identifications of data element types representing properties of cutting items and features; and definitions of domains of values for those data element types. It also indicates one implementation method (ISO 10303‑21) by which the standard data can be exchanged. NOTE: the information model for cutting tools is defined in ISO 13399-1 and complementary parts cover tool items, adaptive items, assembly and auxiliary items.
General information
- Status: Published (confirmed).
- Publication date: November 2021.
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 25.100.01; 35.240.50.
- Edition / version: Edition 3 (2021).
- Number of pages: 201 (ISO listing; some national publication listings show alternative page counts such as 210).
Scope
The scope covers standard data that represent classes of cutting items and cutting-item features, properties of those items and features, and the domains of values used to describe them. It defines reference systems and one exchange implementation method (ISO 10303‑21). The document does not define the information model for cutting tools (see ISO 13399‑1) nor the classes/properties for tool items, adaptive items, assembly items or auxiliary items beyond what is necessary for the cutting-item reference dictionary.
Key topics and requirements
- Reference dictionary of cutting items and features (names, definitions, classifications).
- Data element types for properties of cutting items and their features.
- Domains of values (permitted value sets and units) for data elements.
- Reference systems and identifiers for cutting-item concepts.
- One specified exchange/implementation method based on ISO 10303‑21 (STEP file wrapper).
Typical use and users
Used by tooling manufacturers, CAM/CAD system vendors, PLM and ERP integrators, manufacturing engineers, data architects and system implementers who need a standardized vocabulary and data elements to represent, exchange and manage cutting-tool information across systems and supply chains.
Related standards
ISO 13399‑1 (information model for cutting tools) and other parts of the ISO 13399 series (for tool items, adaptive items, assembly and auxiliary items) are complementary. The specification references ISO 10303‑21 as an implementation method for data exchange. This document replaces earlier editions/versions of ISO/TS 13399‑2 (2005, 2014) and is maintained within the ISO 13399 family.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO/TS 13399‑2:2021 is the part of the ISO 13399 series that provides a reference dictionary of cutting items, their features and the data elements and value domains used to describe them, enabling standardized representation and exchange of cutting-tool data.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers standardized names, definitions, classification identifiers, property data element types and domains of values for cutting items and their features, plus a recommended implementation/exchange method (ISO 10303‑21). It does not provide the overall information model for cutting tools (see ISO 13399‑1) nor implementation methods other than the specified STEP wrapper.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Tool manufacturers, CAD/CAM and PLM vendors, systems integrators, manufacturing engineers and anyone exchanging or managing detailed cutting-tool data across software and organizational boundaries.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2021 edition (Edition 3) is the current published and confirmed version; ISO records show the publication date as November 2021 and that this edition was reviewed/confirmed in a later review cycle and remains current.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 13399 family. Related parts include ISO 13399‑1 (information model) and additional technical specifications covering tool items, adaptive items, assembly items and auxiliary items (for example ISO/TS 13399‑3, ‑4, ‑5).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Cutting tool, cutting item, reference dictionary, data element, classification, ISO 13399, data exchange, STEP, manufacturing data.
