Full title and description

ISO 10545-23:2025 — Ceramic tiles — Part 23: Determination of elastic modulus for glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles, substrate and glaze layer. This International Standard specifies a three-point bending test method, specimen preparation and reporting requirements to determine the elastic modulus of plate-shaped ceramic tiles and the modulus of the glaze layer at ambient temperature.

Abstract

This document defines procedures for preparing test specimens, selecting test modes and load rates, performing three-point bending tests and collecting and reporting data to determine the elastic modulus of glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles, their substrate and the glaze layer at ambient temperature. It is intended for material research, quality control, characterization and generation of design data and excludes ceramic tiles with profiled structures that cannot be machined into test specimens.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: 25 July 2025 (Edition 1, 2025).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 91.100.23 (Ceramic tiles).
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (2025).
  • Number of pages: 12 pages (official PDF edition).

Scope

Specifies a test method to determine the elastic modulus of glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles, the substrate and the glaze layer by three-point bending at ambient temperature. The standard covers specimen preparation, test modes, loading rates, data acquisition and reporting. It is applicable to plate-shaped ceramic tiles that can be machined into test specimens and intended for research, quality control and design-data generation; it is not applicable to profiled tiles that cannot be prepared as specimens.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of specimen geometry and preparation procedures for substrate and glaze layer testing.
  • Three-point bending test setup, support span selection and conditioning at ambient temperature.
  • Specified load rates, data collection methods (force–displacement) and calculation of elastic modulus.
  • Requirements for reporting test results, test conditions and any deviations.
  • Limitations and applicability — not for profiled or non‑machinable tile geometries.

Typical use and users

Used by ceramic tile manufacturers, materials laboratories, test houses, research & development teams, product designers and quality assurance personnel to characterize mechanical stiffness, compare materials and inform structural or design calculations. Also employed by standards bodies and conformity assessment organizations when establishing product performance declarations.

Related standards

This part is one of the ISO 10545 series on ceramic tiles (other parts cover dimensions, water absorption, bending strength, resistance tests and additional mechanical and physical properties). Users often consult other ISO 10545 parts and applicable regional adoptions (EN/BS/ national versions) when performing comprehensive tile testing.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10545-23:2025 is an International Standard that specifies a method to determine the elastic modulus of glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles, including the substrate and the glaze layer, using three-point bending tests.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers specimen preparation, selection of test modes and support spans, load rates, data collection (force–displacement), calculation procedures for elastic modulus and reporting requirements. It applies to plate-shaped tiles that can be machined into specimens and is not intended for profiled tiles.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Tile manufacturers, independent testing laboratories, materials researchers, product designers and quality assurance personnel use this standard for material characterization, R&D and quality control. Standards committees and conformity assessors may also reference it.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: This standard is current and was published as ISO 10545-23:2025 (Edition 1) on 25 July 2025.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is part of the ISO 10545 series, a set of parts addressing various test methods and properties for ceramic tiles. Users commonly refer to multiple parts of ISO 10545 for comprehensive characterization and compliance testing.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Ceramic tiles, elastic modulus, three-point bending, glaze layer, substrate, test method, ISO 10545, mechanical characterization.
