Full title and description
St ISO 6502-2-2025 — Rubber — Measurement of vulcanization characteristics using curemeters — Part 2: Oscillating disc curemeter. This second-edition ISO standard specifies a method for determining selected vulcanization characteristics of rubber compounds using an oscillating-disc curemeter and replaces the 2018 edition.
Abstract
The standard defines the apparatus, test-piece preparation, test conditions, measurement procedure and expression of results for vulcametric tests carried out with an oscillating-disc curemeter. It is intended to produce torque (stiffness) vs time curves from which parameters related to scorch, cure rate and final state of cure can be derived.
General information
- Status: Published (replaces ISO 6502-2:2018).
- Publication date: 16 July 2025.
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 83.060 (Rubber).
- Edition / version: Edition 2 (2025).
- Number of pages: 13 pages (PDF/print formats reported).
Scope
Specifies a laboratory procedure to determine selected vulcanization characteristics of rubber compounds by means of an oscillating-disc curemeter, including requirements for apparatus performance, sample preparation, test temperatures and the expression and reporting of results. It is intended as the Part 2 complement to the introductory/overview material given in Part 1 of the series.
Key topics and requirements
- Apparatus and calibration — design and performance requirements for oscillating-disc curemeters, temperature control, torque measurement accuracy and recommended calibration checks with reference compounds.
- Test-piece preparation and conditioning — sample size, homogeneity, conditioning and handling to minimise variability.
- Test procedure — die heating and stabilization, rapid loading, start of oscillation, recording torque vs time until the specified end point.
- Measured parameters — extraction of minimum and maximum torque (ML, MH), scorch markers, times-to-percentage cure (e.g., t'90), cure-rate indices and related derived values used for process control and formulation evaluation.
- Data reporting — required content of test reports, units, curve presentation and indication of instrument and test conditions to ensure traceability and reproducibility.
Typical use and users
Used by rubber-compound formulators, quality-control and research laboratories, tyre and technical-rubber manufacturers, curemeter instrument manufacturers, and standards bodies. Typical applications include formulation comparison, production process optimisation, incoming raw-material screening and instrument calibration/verification.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 6502 series; key related documents include ISO 6502-1:2025 (Introduction and general requirements for curemeter measurement) and the earlier ISO 6502-2:2018 (this 2025 edition supersedes the 2018 text). Other normative references and test-method cross-references are cited within the standard.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 6502-2:2025 is the second-edition international standard that specifies laboratory methods for measuring vulcanization characteristics of rubber compounds using an oscillating-disc curemeter.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers apparatus requirements, sample preparation, test temperatures and procedures, how to record torque versus time, and how to derive and report key cure parameters used for process control and material evaluation.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Rubber compounders, QC and R&D laboratories, tyre and rubber-product manufacturers, and instrument suppliers use this standard for routine testing, formulation development and instrument calibration.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: Current — the 2018 edition has been withdrawn and superseded by ISO 6502-2:2025 (published 16 July 2025).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 6502 series; Part 1 provides the introduction and general requirements for curemeter measurement and other parts may cover related instruments or procedures.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Curemeter, oscillating disc, vulcanization, torque curve, scorch time, t90, ML, MH, cure rate index, rubber testing.
